Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I have been asked to see the practice nurse re my prediabetes, which to me looks like could be type 2 diabetes now.
Because of tghe coronovirus, I had to have telephone consultation, but keep losing her call, and she doesnt try to phone again.
I really just need advice, and does it look like it has gone from prediabetes to full blown.

Test results Haemoglobin A1c level - IFCC standardised 48 mmol/mol

Thanks for any help in these busy days

48 is now Diabetic, what do you mean you keep losing her call?

Oh that is bad. Maybe you should contact the Practice Manager, and discuss this. The phone consultations I have had with my Doctors are all landline. Though some of them they were running late.

Hi and Welcome to the forum @nilcam232 - shame about the telephone consultation. Must be very frustrating for you.

Hopefully we can give you a few pointers to guide you when managing yourself (until things settle down again with appointments). Firstly, You are only just into the diabetic range, so try not to worry too much - there is lots you can do yourself to improve this score.

You will more than likely be making a few alterations to your diet to level off / keep you under that 48 number if at all possible. We can just do our best.

If not already restricting/avoiding such things as pasta, rice, potatoes, flour products like pastry, cakes, biscuits and exotic fruits then maybe you should consider doing so. There are better alternatives. It just take a little planning and determination to create a new menu and respect diabetes. We have good forums/threads on food, https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/boards/forums/food-carb-queries-recipes.4/ .... We make 'cauliflower mash/rice' you will barely notice it isnt potato or conventional rice. I tend to eat only veg that grow above ground (less carbs) plus a small handful of fruit that has the name 'berry' a couple of times a week. And it the CARBs we must be aware of, not just obvious sugars. You will need to get in the habit of reading labels on food for 'total' carb contents and go for the lowest possible. All fruit/veg have a carb element. and carbs turn to glucose in the body and do our levels no good whatsoever. I found this site useful : https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/foods

Also take a look at the site forums here : https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/boards/threads/useful-links-for-people-new-to-diabetes.10406/

We also have a 'Learning Zone' (above, top of the page, orange tab, sign in separately there for more info).

There is a lot to read, take your time to absorb it all - make your plans, educate yourself. You will see diabetes is a very individual process and how the body react to certain foods, we are all different! Self monitoring at home is a useful tool - more about the meters for that in the links i gave you. Scroll through and pick out things you want more info on there.

Above all - do it slowly, give your body time to adjust otherwise you could create other problems. Any change is a shock, go sensibly with it. Good luck, and come back with any observations/questions, we are here to help you.

Thank you so much, you have been so helpful. I will start to read through these pointers. Makes me feel so much better, talking to others 🙂

Sorry you are having such a frustrating time @nilcam232

This pandemic is causing so many problems for people, and so many simple things are being made all but impossible. :(

Hope you manage to make contact tomorrow.
