Erm that's my limited repetoire of names for now. I might add a few in a bit...

One of my favourite lady friends is a Sarah, as is my lovely niece. And I'm a big fan of Kate or Catherine in all its forms. Elizabeth is one of those really flexible names - lots of diminutives like Liz, lizzie, betty, beth, eliza, ellie etc.

What about Firenza instead of Florence? I've always liked Natalia, or Natasha. When in Russia we joked that 'Slava Trudu' was a pop star's name (it actually means 'Glory to Labour!🙂), but Slava is a boy's name - and of course Alexander, with lovely diminutive Sasha, or Xander - unusual, but 'young' sounding. My sister broke with a family tradition of Margarets - my mum, grandma and sister all have this as one of their names, but neither of my neices.

I'm sure I'll think of lots more!🙂

Alan sounds like a good, trustworthy, intelligent, handsome name...😉

My grandma on my dad's side was called Ruby - not a name to pick, perhaps, if your surname is Murray, but it suited her well! Hard for me to think of a little baby as a Ruby though, for that reason.

As someone who is two days younger than Blue Peter (hence I missed the first programme😉), Petra will always have associations with the famous dog, I'm afraid.

And don't forget there's always the option of Moon Unit or Spudulik?, for something a little more exotic!🙂

How about the names not to go for...

My mother got lumbered with Gertrude... the male side of my fathers side of the family is Ernest...

My friends daughter called her baby Faith, names like Faith, Hope Charity, Chastity and Patience were given to Victorian girls as the parents believed their daughters would be endowed with these virtues.

HA! HA! I think they are as important!
Fascinating - the names that have been suggested we have not thought of...and we are not going for anything too mad - definitely food for thought - only one I have to discount is Ruby as one of my best friend's is called that and she wouldn't be too happy - (I sussed it out - as liked the name!). Not too worried as it is very common nowadays.

I'd suggest avoiding names with the same initial as either parent (assuming the same surname), as my mum and I both have names beginning with J, and it still sometimes causes confusion if post is addressed to intitials and surname, instead of name & surname. Not really a problem now, but for years I used my parents' home as my permanent address for friends to write to, as I was moving round so much, and it was before email. Another friend shared J with her dad, and that caused confusion if letter writers didn't include Mr / Mrs / Ms.

I have a freind called Ruby, she is lovely and a very good friend, but a bit crazy.

Having the same intials, my brother and I are both C (he is Christopher), so before I maried it caused no end of arguments when people forgot to put mr or miss or our full given names.. My brothers second wife is Sharon and my mum is Sylvia, so two Mrs. S. Birds. My brother also has children calle Danniell and Dayner. Another friend is Rose and her daughter is Rachel which makes for confusion if people are politcally correct and adress things to Ms. R Person!

Hi All,

My daughter is called Ruby.....She is 8yrs old going on 18! She is beautiful, very smart, intelligent (like her mum! lol) very caring......a very long awaited special little girl! We were a little worried about the "Ruby Murry" jokes but I really loved it & when I went into labour on my own (in hospital) while O/H was asleep at home & gave birth in 6 mins flat from start to finish I took it upon myself to name her myself!

Ive always loved the name Martha,

this was my partners grans name and she is the reason we met. I was a nurse and she was in my nursing home, many moons ago.........🙄

6 mins!!!! Wow! I can hope....!!!
Tracey - I really really like Martha - OH not keen though! Have a while to work on him...!!

I always fancied being called Arriadne or Arracne, don't ask me why, just liked the sound of them I guess. At least we have decent names for our kids and don't call them Fifi Trixabel or Peaches (although I like peaches) or after places (Paris Hilton, Brooklyn Beckham) or after football teams like Chelsea!
