Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Has anyone has heard of prednisolone being used to control Type 1? I read recently about a type 1 diabetic, also a runner, being advised to go this route, having both diabetes and Addison's. I can't find the article and wonder if anyone has heard of this? Thanks

Hi Pat, welcome to the forum 🙂 I don't see how this could work, personally, since Type 1 is an absence of insulin. I know that there are some issues surrounding blood sugar levels and Addison's though, so I won't speculate further - hopefully, some of our members with both conditions will be along to help 🙂

Hi Pat I use both HC and pred plus the flurdrocotisone for my Addison's. There's a skier in the USA who uses that mix as well. The pred is more of a slow release steroid so I personally find I get better results from the combination of both as the HC give me the kick start in the morning I need. Also stops the low blood sugars as the HC tended to wear off so quickly.
 
Thanks for these replies. It is my daughter that has both, me I'm just diabetic, type 1 for 48 years.
 
I'm not sure how this would work. I'm on long term steroids for asthma and it's made my diabetes worse and potentially damage to my adrenal gland.

Just found her name - Lindsey Fallow. Can't find any news articles about her though, and the One Show episode is no longer available :(

The person Pat was referring to is on another forum. He is a Canadian and being accused of using steroids to treat his diabetes by the health board!! He has informed them he has Addison's which it appears they know but still saying he is self prescribing and misusing drugs!!

My daughter has asked me to ask you in what way the diabetes is worse - ie is it less control of BG? Do you have a pump? And if so, does it help ? Sorry not to have replied sooner.

Pat, taking steroids for a life threatening condition (Addison's) is a must and your daughter needs to learn how to manage her diabetes around her steroid dose. Reading on another forum where your daughter has posted it transpires she has very little understanding of even the basics of her diabetes management. Until she understands how to use her insulin and to even do a basic basal test (which she has no knowledge) then a pump will not help her. Putting it very bluntly and it's not meant to be unkind so please do not take it that way, your daughter needs to change her Doctor as he seems to know very little if anything about diabetes and go on some education courses so she has the basics to help herself.

I have been type 1 for 48 years and still have highs and lows(that I can't explain) - even my diabetic specialist doesn't know why! I appreciate your thoughts and have passed this onto her. I'll see what she says.

I went on one after 30+ years living with it - I was over 50 - and rather thought I'd know it all, but folk said it was the best thing, so I went.

I learned SHEDloads. It changed my whole life for the better and I was already fairly happy - or at least - I thought I was. How wrong can a person be?

These are available in almost all areas - or ot may well by all - these days - so ASK - both of you.
 
Hi ya pat. Steroids raise my Blood sugar especially in the afternoons after taking a dose in the morning. I'm on MDI (multiple daily injections). My steroid dose varies and I increase and decrease my insulin requirements as required. As others have said doing a DAFNE course would be really helpful. Does your daughter stay on the same dose of steroids or does it vary? It should be easier to manage if on the same dose as it's easier to work out how much insulin you require.

Thank you for this - I have attended something similar, but not for 5 days. It was helpful, yes.
 
Hi Sue

Does the pred,s longer effect lower sleep quality? Or have any additional effects? Eg weight gain, moodyness?

I,ve been feeling really tired lately. I take 15mg of HC a.m., which by lunch has worn off. A few hrs later, I,m ok again. Except I often wake in the night about 3-4 am. And might stay awake.
