Hello all
William is struggling with acne right now, and is pretty fed up about it. We will probably have to wait until the holidays to see our GP as W is away at school in the week, so I wondered if you have any experience of T1/acne? I imagine sugar spikes don't help, although his levels are pretty good. Unfortunately my husband's family has quite a history of acne, and some of W's cousins have had fairly drastic drug treatment which did the trick. Poor William seems to have drawn a short straw on the genetic front, lymphoedema, T1 and now acne!! If you have any short term tips before we see our GP I'll pass them on to him as he'd like to have something to try out. I have suggested keeping sugars as steady as possible. He showers every day and uses a tea tree face wash ... that's it so far. The current outbreak has only been really bad for about 3 weeks. William is nearly 6ft tall, has grown incredibly fast over the last year so hormones are probably in overdrive.
Thanks
Catherine

one of my non diabetic friends swears by dabbing spots with lemon juice and TCP as they start to appear, but it doesn't always work. Hope you find something that works soon.

Dabbing with toothpaste helps a little but no idea why.

My son was the same with acne - and right until about 22 - was told he would be very scarred - but now has the most beautiful clear face.
It might be a case of just waiting for him to get older. We tried everything and only the toothpaste seemed to make a difference I am afraid.

Dermatologist is your best bet if it is severe enough.
Also wash the face at least 3 times a day to

Rosemary or lavender can be helpful to if dabbed onto a cotton bud then onto effected area

Ive always tryed the lemon trick caroline suggested and it worked

I have suffered really badly with acne from the age of 11 and I am now 25! It used to be awful but here are a few tips which have helped calm mine down a lot:

1. Put toothpaste on spots overnight
2. Do not pop the spots!
3. Cut down on junk food. I know they say this doesn't affect acne, but it does. Since I cut out fizzy drinks, crisps and chocolate my acne has cleared considerably. Well I still have the odd chocolate bar now and again but my skin is worse off for it for the next couple of days.
4. Eat more fruit and veg. Just stick some salad in sandwiches and have a couple of pieces of fruit with lunch.

I did try the various topical treatments the GP offered me but they just made my skin feel greasy and bleached my pillowcases!

Hope this helps him. I know how horrible it feels to have yucky spots. Also point out to him that probably no one else really notices them.

Also just wanted to add that some people are very allergic to tea tree. I unfortunately am one of them. Does William find his acne has worsened since using the tea tree facewash? Maybe try a very gentle facewash for sensitive skins? x

My husband suffered dreadful acne when we first met. He tried all sorts of soaps, lotions and potions, and nothing seemed to help. I suggested, and I know it sounds dirty, to stop using EVERYTHING, just plain water on his face. It worked so quickly and his skin improved dramatically. Ok, not 100%, but a significant improvement. I often think half these concoctions they sell are full of chemicals and things to block the pores, but just a good scrub with a clean flannel and nice hot water (then cold after if you like) and it feels good and doesn't leave the skin covered in all sorts of random chemicals. Might be worth a try for a week or two.

My Mum gets dreadful acne on her back if she has the smallest amount of wine or bread. Something to do with yeast I presume. Might be worth trying a few days without bread to see if it makes a difference.

Because I have quite sensitive skin I rarely use anything other than plain water and a good fragrance free moisturiser

Thank you everyone for these ideas. I'll show them to William when he gets back at the w/e and see how it goes - toothpaste is the most surprising one!
Best wishes
Catherine
