Hi all, I have noticed increasing aches and pains mainly in my lower back and hip joints. I am on atorvastatin (before that simvastatin) .....my cholesterol has always been in range but my GP insists that I should take it as a preventative med. I am going to stop taking this med for maybe 3 weeks to see if my aches and pains go or not.

Does anyone else out there have the same issue of aching joints.....I know it might be an age thing! 😉

The pain that's caused by statins is deep in the muscle tissue, not the joints. I tried exactly what you did when I had a long-lasting pain in my left elbow, and 3 weeks off Atorvastatin had no effect at all. The pain went away a couple of months later, after I had re-started the statin.

On the other hand, when I had muscle pain (right biceps) on Simvastatin, the pain went away within a couple of days of swapping to Atorvastatin.

my joints certainly ached more on simvastatin than atorvastatin......but whether the atorvastatin is causing me joint pain or not my trial will soon see.

There might be another cause, old age, arthritis being over tired. Have a chat to your doctor too.

I did the same Phil, started on Simvastatin and switched to Atorvastatin because I was always aching somewhere or other - made no difference, so I took a completely statin-free break for three weeks, no different.

I put it down to arthritis and old injuries. I used to take a minimal dose of Diclofenac (Voltarol) daily to cure it but the doc has switched this to Naproxen in order to minimise other complications.

Not an ideal situation but for me the benefits far outweigh the risks, at least I can tie my own shoelaces now. No way was I going to start wearing those slip-ons you see advertised in the Daily Mail.

With your advanced years Phil, I would suspect it's an age thing 😛😉🙂
