Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I was diagnosed with type 1, 4 years when I was 28. No complications, and although my control isn't great at the moment (primarily due to short term changes in my life, work stress, lack of exercise and the like) it usually is. My GP has suggested I go on a low dose of an ACE Inhibitor. My blood pressure is good. I've never even heard of an ACE inhibitor. Is it normal to start the medication in my situation? Just after some thoughts form others. Thanks.

Hi Lennox, welcome to the forum 🙂 What is your blood pressure normally like? For people with diabetes they prefer it to be better than the non-diabetic population, so a reading of 120/80 or below is desirable - this is because of the greater risks that diabetes presents to (in particular) the microvascular system affecting the eyes and the kidneys. My BP is fine as a rule, but I am on a very small dose of BP medication which I don't mind taking as I get no side-effects from it. I was originally started on an ACE inhibitor (they usually end in -pril) but did have side effects so was put on a different form of BP meds called Angiotensin receptor blockers (usually end in -sarten).

Hope this helps! 🙂

ACE inhibitors are given to some people with diabetes to prevent or slow down kidney damage, especially if your control is not great

I think I take these to sort out my reynauds disease. They seem to work. They are mainly blood pressure treatment but they work a treat for the reynauds and I didn't have high blood pressure when I was prescribed them
