My recommended book is Accidental Ironman by Martyn Brunt. When I became interested in triathlons I subscribed to the 220 Triathlon magazine. The inside back page has a column by Martyn Brunt which is consistently funny. I searched the internet to see whether Martyn had ever written a book and found that he had. The book charts Martyn's hopelessly inept entry into distance running and his entry into his first triathlon for a bet. The humour is often laddish and crude but the book is just as consistently funny as Martyn's regular column.

Sounds good Chris! 🙂 I've run quite a few marathons, but I haven't been swimming since 1991 and have never learned to ride a bike, so a triathlon would be a bit of a challenge on top of the actual effort involved! 😱 Good luck to you in your events, I will look out for the book 🙂

Having re-read my original post on this one, I realised that I haven't really given a very good description of what this book is about. The book charts Martyn's hopelessly inept entry into distance running and his entry into his first triathlon for a bet. Having succeeded in completing the London Triathlon he was later spotted by members of his local tri club leafing through a copy of 220 Triathlon magazine while his wife was shopping. Having been invited to one of their meetings he gradually got sucked in to doing the sport regularly and gaining a reasonable level of competence. He covers being last pick at school football games and his total lack of talent for football, rugby and cricket. Getting roped in to swimming the Channel as part of a relay team. The trouble that he landed himself in when he entered a marathon on his wife's birthday. Eventually finishing ten Iron distance triathlons with many painful pratfalls along the way.

Being last pick at school is something that I can identify with because I was that guy too.

I have just finished re-reading this book for the umpteenth time and it is still laugh out loud funny. My copy is now starting to fall apart.

I used to spend 3 days a week IN the north sea in big waves etc :D
