Some of you may remember that I have posted a few times about the bouts of sickness I keep getting.

Well last Monday I had it yet again - and this time it was so violent and unforgiving (sorry) and since then I have felt sick every day and still do.

I cannot find a cure for it.

The GP didn't think it was anything to worry about and I really don't feel like going back with it again as seeing her with so many other things I don't want to feel like a hypocondriac!

I am so fed up with feeling ill. I have taken some Omeprazole last night and this morning (used to take them a while ago and had a few left) to see if they help.

To be honest the only thing that has helped for a second is mint imperials!

I am now wondering if it could be connected in any way to the metformin.
I have been on Metformin for about a year now and not had any side effects before. I did ask previously if it could be that I had forgotten to take them and then started on a full dose again, but have answered that question myself now and ruled it out.

Does anyone know if Metformin can start to disagree with you after a year of it being okay? I also have a bad tummy at the other end as well (sorry again) but the sickness is worse!

I am not on slow release and am wondering if I should change to this but seem to remember the consultant thinking that the none slow release would be better for me.

I feel like I have had a bucket of grease if that helps but actually have been eating healthy.

Please can anyone help - I really am at the end of my tether!:(

I have been told metformin builds up in the system and sometimes the side effects re surface.

Just a suggestion, and it may help you see a pattern if there is one. Keep a note of what you eat and your activity levels and what medications you take. Give it a few weeks and see what happens, and keep talking to your doctor.

It might be you have an intolerance to something you have been eating, in which case keepig a log of what you eat will help show what it is.

I hope you feel better soon and find an answer to all the things worrying you.

Thanks Caroline - but I have already done this and can't really see a link. When I am actually sick it is normally after exercise - but then the sick feeling remains for a good time afterwards - sometimes with more actual sickness.

Just before I am sick I get a tightness in my chest and I cannot stop being sick- just thought I would add this too.

Might it be something to do with the type of exercise yu do? I'm just clutching at strws here.

Many years ago when I was taking metformin, I used to get bout's of the 'toilet dash' I be fine for several weeks then it would hit me.. Up all night and nothing would settle until about dinner time and I would be fine for another couple of weeks.

Another thing you might consider is food!

Keep a diary of foods you eat, then look to see if there is a common ingredient/item to when you start having your bouts of sickness..

As it's possible to have an allergic reaction to one food item, and you eat it, the body wants rid off..

Seen this happen with an elderly patient when I worked in care... Couldn't work out why she was regularly sick, until we clocked that it seemed to be at the same time she ate mushrooms.. stopped the mushrooms bingo no more sickness

Just before I am sick I get a tightness in my chest and I cannot stop being sick- just thought I would add this too.

Could it be some kind of reflux? I get a tightness in my chest and nausea (although not actually sick myself) when my stomach is playing up and I get acid reflux. The omeprazole should help this but maybe also try taking some gaviscon or something similar to see if that helps. Exercise could also set the reflux off, I can't do sit ups for example.

Hi Lucy I'm so sorry to hear about this sickness, it must be awful for you. Is it worth another visit to the GP to ask them to prescribe you an anti-sickness medication?

Thanks Everyone for replies.
I have been keeping the food diary and everything else, meds, exercise etc.
I think I will just have to be brave and if I still feel sick tomorrow (day 9) I will make an appointment.

Can a gp really do anything to tell you what is causing sickness though.
It was that bad last time I was going to take a sample but didn't as I thought it would be ridiculous. Wish I had now though.🙄

Is there any possiblity that it is gastroparesis causing the vomiting?

Hi Lucy, definatley go back to docs, and no need to feel like a hypocondriac. I felt a bit like that until my diabetic nurse refered me to my consultant to do further investigations. Had been back to docs at least once a month for eight months. I started to feel like not going b ut wife made me. You know if your not right, keep going till u get sorted. hope you feel better soon.

hi lucy i had the exact same problem after two years on metformin. my stomach was all over the place with violent sickness and also diarrhoea which had blood in it. after many tests including camera down and up the way my dr and consultant came to the conclusion it WAS the metformin. i've been on metformin sr {slow release} for just under 4 years and absolutely no probs as it doesn't hit you all in one go it slow releases.i hope this helps. i'm also on citagliptan and one week on pioglitazone with no major side effects even though ihave major reservations about new drug . 🙂

I was having bad bouts of sickness, every couple of weeks. I take omeprazole, which helps with the acid reflux. I started taking probiotic capsules, around a year ago and, touch wood, I have only had a couple of sickness bouts since taking them. If you are interested,in trying this approach, pm me and I will tell you which probiotics I take. I hope this helps you.

Well late last night and today the sickness and the feeling sick seem to have settled again so I won't contact the GP.

I am going to email the consultant though and see if he thinks metformin would be a good idea in sr form instead.

The problem is I know at the moment it will be back again.😱

thank you for all your helpful and supportive comments it makes me feel more motivated to get it sorted rather than worrying there is always something wrong.🙂

The consultant has asked me to go straight onto slow release to see if this helps - the sickness and diarrhoea can actually be down to the normal metformin even though I have been found on it for a year.

I have to try and get the surgery to give me a prescription tomorrow - fingers crossed but I doubt it.

I will post again if I notice a difference but I do know things can't carry on the way things have been.🙂

Hope things settle down for you lucy x

Thanks Di - just waiting for the GP to call back and confirm she can do the prescription today without a letter from the consultant. I hope so otherwise it could be a long wait and I have stopped the normal metformin, but now have BS levels much higher than normal - and only stopped it yesterday!🙂

Hope you are feeling okay today.🙂

Hi Lucy, do you think a probiotic would help sort out your problems? Did wonder if good bacteria would help kick start things for you?
Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks Sue - I am willing to give anything a go - and will buy some when shopping next to see if works. Is there one you recommend?

I do think it is the metformin though - I have heard you can overdose on it and it makes you very ill - which is just how I feel!

Hi Lucy, I can't recommend any but if you go into a health food shop someone in there should be able to help you. 🙂
