A stupid test

Aye, Leonora, we’re all different. A Snickers would send my BG into double figures. You can only find out by experimentation what suits you in terms of the odd treat.

Yes Mike. Crazy isn't it what people can tolerate? Had 1 hash brown yesterday. Never again!

The sugar in the snicker may have peaked very high soon after eating because it hits the blood stream quickly but be gone from your system after 2 hours. The starchy carbs from the potato in the hash browns will take longer to break down and therefore much more likely to show high at the 2 hour testing point. If you try another snicker, it would be interesting to know what the reading is after just one hour instead of 2.

I too find that starchy foods are far more of a problem for my body than sweet because they spike my blood glucose high for up to 10hrs after eating them. That said, the sugar is addictive and I am trying to break my habit and alter my tastes, so I am doing my utmost to keep off the sugary stuff which I firmly believe has burned my pancreas out. The worst I have now is a square of dark 70% chocolate every now and then. There is a banana calling me though and I may mash one with cream and yoghurt tonight and see how I get on.

Hi Barbara. I didn't think of testing after one hour and have the sneaky suspicion that you might be right. I'm incredibly sensitive to carbs, too, so I keep them to an absolute minimum. They can spike my sugar for up to 5 hours so I have to be very careful. I can eat 1 slice of Hovis but I have to cut the crusts off. Or if I have rice-which is rare- I have a heaped tablespoon just to say I've had some. Otherwise I keep to salads, stir-frys and meat, yogurts and berries. I do hope you find out soon whether you're type 1 or not. Good luck.

Hi Leonora
I guess I am lucky in some respects in that I can take insulin to cover any carbs I eat but I really try to keep that to an absolute minimum. The down side to the insulin is that you run the risk of having a hypo if you get it wrong.
Saw my consultant yesterday and got confirmation that I am Type 1 but I'm not sure that actually changes anything as regards my treatment or lifestyle choices, as I intend to continue with my very low carb diet.... that way, I need less insulin and less risk of going hypo, although I do relish the opportunity to eat a couple of prunes when I do dip too low..... I used to really love dried fruit! I used to love sweets and chocolate too for that matter but now that I can't have much fruit, I really prefer my hypo remedy to be that healthier option, although I do have jelly beans and Dextrose tablets stashed around the place and in all my handbags just in case as they are easier to store/carry.

At least you know now Barbara. Out of interest was there something at set off your sudden diabetes? Mine came on suddenly when I was ill and was put on high dose steroids. I've been told the diabetes is here to stay because I'm down to 3mg of prednisolone and the low dose hasn't made a dent! Well, good luck and I'm sure if you continue with the low carb your a1c will be wonderfully low in 3 months. Good luck x
