just when I thought I was doing well..........

2 hours after my mid-day meal (a tuna sandwich and a fresh pear) I was 8.4 .... then after my walk I was 7.1 (which was a surprise as it wasn't as low as usual after exercise)..... then 2 hours after my evening meal I felt extremely tired so tested my BG and was 13.2 😱

I ate a homemade chicken curry using chicken breast..... with puy lentils instead of rice (just a small portion) with about a third of a nan bread

anyone know what caused the spike?

ps..... by the way I had my flu jab today at 11.30am ..... might that have contributed to the spike?

i get spikes 4-5 hours after any carbohydrate but can manage these on pump, not sure how it works with type 2 im afraid. the flu jab i would imagine would mess sugars around xxx

Hi Marcie what bread did you have with the tuna? and was it in brine/spring water/oil?

And also naan can have an effect i know a few of us have had spikes due to naan breads....

what bread was it at lunch ? if it was me the pear would have been the culprit for the lunch spike fruit sadly is my nightmare after being such a fruit bat over the years:( but this is what testing is all about really x good luck x🙂

Could be the naan bread definitely one to avoid and probably the flu injection as well

I had my usual multigrain bread with the tuna... have always been ok with that.... and the tuna was in brine which I drained off really well

I had some of the same naan bread last week and was ok with it..... but I suppose it could have affected me

will try those puy lentils again tomorrow but they should be ok shouldn't they?

just tested again and I'm now down to 8.9 🙂

mmmmm the jab or the pear i would say ....

thanks everyone :D

I don't think it was the pear as I've been eating them with no effect for 2 weeks...... but who knows what effect the jab had.... but I am back down to my 'normal' levels now so hopefully it was just the jab or the naan or both lol

but thanks to everyone who posted suggestions :D

awww good luck hunny its so difficult to get the balance ..sometimes we get the spike just because we just do !! hey ho xx🙂

I have heard of people noticing bg rises after the flu jab (while others show no effect!). If there was something today which was new or less usual it might be worth a cautious retest to see if the spike recurs.

Sometimes I'm too quick to blame certain foodsm, and later I'll discover they seem fine after all.

While more often than not you can work out the reason, sometimes it's just 'one of those things' and you can never be sure what the cause was :(

the only new thing today was the flu jab and the puy lentils. I'll try the lentils again in a couple of days..... but I'll give the flu jab a miss til next winter 😉

Hi Macast,

The lentils are unlikely to have been the cause of the spike as they are low GI. I would think it was the Naan Bread - and perhaps the effects of the flu jab.:(🙂Bev

Dear macast,

The rise in blood glucose is disconcerting, but not a problem if it doesn't happen too often. From what you have said, it is clear that you have eaten carbohydrate and from the rise in BG it was too much! Why not adopt an approach to carb control as outlined here.

Warmest Regards Dodger

Hi There,

I've yet to try Puy lentils which I love. Will let you know if they spike. It's very possible, it could be the flu jab. Watch this space, I get mine, next Tuesday, so we can compare notes.

I think the trick is to test each individual thing on it's own, I'm fine with certain with fruits especially apples, which I love. That's the downside, we often have to give up foods which we really love.

Good luck finding out and let us know how you get on.

Donna xx

p.s. how did you feel after the flu job, any symptoms?

Pulses shouldn't cause a spike, I'd expect that it was more due (as others have suggested) to the flu jab and the naan bread - naan bread spikes me horrendously! 😱

it didn't hurt at the time.... but now my upper arm/shoulder area is a bit tender... just as expected. but no symptoms except the spike which as others suggest was probably the naan bread :( and maybe the flu jab combined..... as the naan bread didn't cause any spike last week (but I'll still give it another test at the weekend)

thanks again everyone for your comments and advice. you really are stars 🙂
