Certainly sounds like DKA to me Silmarillion, and not a great deal different to my own experience. Another hour and I would have become unconscious, and since I live alone I would not have been found until too late :( Fortunately, I still had the wherewithal to call 999.

Since my admission (I was in 8 days) my care has been very different to what you have received. I find it appalling and inexplicable that you weren't put on insulin after your discharge. It borders on negligence :(

I actually spoke about your situation to my consultant at my review yesterday (he's one of the top ones in the country), and he was very concerned. He said that you should insist on a referral to a consultant, but was unable to recommend one specifically since we don't know exactly where you live. Don't be fobbed off - it is your right to be referred. The following lists endocrinologists in Glasgow, it might be some help:

Whatever your GP thinks about your diagnosis, her is clearly not providing the proper care to help you with the problems you are experiencing - how can he not see this?

If only you were my doctor northerner......you know a lot more about diabetes than he does.....
Sorry for whining, I'm usually quite a happy go lucky kind of girl....

The only good thing about yesterday was that the dietician is going to send me a new blood sugar machine and a load of free strips....she agreed my doc has really old fashioned ideas about how to manage diabetes....

As for a consultant referral....I don't think he'll do that......I might see if I can arrange an appointment privately and pay for it myself....

I'm in no doubt I would have been treated differently in Australia....

I agree entirely with you Silmarillon, I haven't been back on the forum long after an absence of 3 months, so if you've told us that before I missed it - sorry. But you describe yourself as T2 so I'm afraid I simply assumed you were.

You are certainly NOT classic T2 - and I do NOT understand why the hospital showed you as T2 on discharge back to your doctor and did not prescribe ongoing insulin, either!

Trophy wench, basically my doc has looked at me....I'm 45 with a BMI of 30.....so he has made assumptions base upon that.....assumptions not based on any blood tests I might add.....he's just assumed because I'm overweight and 45 that I'm a type 2 and he has told me that. To him I'm just a bunch of numbers and he can't see past them and look at the bigger picture........so if my case is highlighting the way diabetics are going to be managed by GPs in the future....god help us all

The ignorance makes me despair, and from someone who we are supposed to put our trust in :( Type 1, especially in adults, can happen to anyone, regardless of age or size - you cannot make such a simplistic judgement :( Do kick up a fuss until you get a referral, and if he refuses then escalate it. What is the doctor's motto? 'Do no harm'. His attitude and inaction is harming you :(
