Calling all ladies!
I'm type 1 and through out my menstrual cycle have up and down levels - in the middle of the cycle it will suddenly spike and go back to normal. Then about 10 days before my period it slowly creeps up again and have to figure out how much more insulin i need, then once i start my period it comes back down! I find this extremely fustrating, it seems i only have about a fornight through out the month that things run normal and i can keep it under control.. no wonder why i have to test 5/7 x daily! Does anyone else have the same trouble??

hi chez i find when im on my period had 2 since diagnosis that my levels are higer and im alot more irratable then usual yes amazing i know im more tired as well , i wonder if it plays havoc down to the diabetes x

Hi Chezpez

I've moved this from the newbies board to the main board as you'll probably get a few more replies here.

My sugars are higher when i'm on my monthly and bitch doesn't even cover it which is why i'm being fitted with the mirena to help me as they say when your diabetic it can cause all sorts of things like heavier, more painful, more agitated (no **** lol)

really? im on for longer and im heavier but i aint sure if i can connect the diebetes with it

Yeah something to do with your hormones

Hi chezpez,

Yes, I have posted something similar about my cycle too. I always get a rise in my blood sugars about a week before my period, then they drop back down as soon as it comes. Maybe not quite as much difference as yours! It's worth chatting to your nurse about it if you've definitely noticed a pattern. Mine suggested I work out my insulin doses as usual but then just add one unit onto each of my short acting injections for that week. It's difficult though, it still seems to vary month to month and no doubt the advice for yours would probably be different! Hey, you're not on your own!

thanx for all your advice - at least i dont feel alone on this! - i too is very irritable before hand and i've notice my period is slightly heavier and longer since my diagnosis 3 yrs ago - i wonder it is coz of my diabetes?

tbh i aint linked the 2 as i said , i have always had dodgy periods since the birth of my boy which is what i was told.

Hi all,

Although I'm not diabetic..research seems to fall on to the hormones interfering with your insulin and blood sugars...In some studies the pre-menstrual insulin doses were approximately 3 units higher than they were mid-cycle. However, during the first couple of days of menstruation, the insulin requirements may fall, predisposing for hypoglycaemia..

Hope this helps

It does help ta.. at least i feel its not just me!

I'm type 2 and at that age where I'm not getting as many periods.

I find I get peeks and troughs with the sugars and I get more than a little irratable with everyone around every 4-6 weeks even if I don't have a period.

They quite often just get heavier with age - mine got to the oint where I was worried about leaving the house in case of flooding, but I have stopped having them now. I expect as your oestrogen reduces through the menopause, it may also have an effect on BS?

your right Runner.. i think it is and age thing with heavier periods as i've just turned 35. Also i've been to the diabetic midwife today (for pre conception ) and she told me it would be age not my diabetes, she also said when your diabetic you have an earlier menopause.. she also told me that periods can cease if your bsl are v. high.. thought i would share that with you all!! xx

yes, seems to match me!, I always seem to go low on day 2 of my period and can be high for a few days before :(, dont seem to get the balance right though as you never know if its because of that or what youve eaten etc. defo coming back as a man!!:D

thanks for that! Im 43 should expect the menopause any day now!!😱

What I didn't realize when I went through it, (and still presumably am a bit) is apparently it lasts over a period (ha ha) of 5 - 10 years as your oestrogen gradually diminishes! Still don't know sometimes whether hot sweats are due to menopause or diabetes as others, including men, seem to get them with the latter. So, more fun to come girls!

Pregnancy can delay the menopause apparently. I'm with you Tracey - coming back as a man - can we choose which one! 🙂
