Hi all,

Just thought I needed to share this with you all...because I'm totally amazed..
After spending a good part of the last 2 years in and out of school..Regarding the fact that they seem to struggle with any piece of information about diabetes...I have to keep going over and over certain areas...there brains at some levels just dont receive the information or fail to apply any common sense...Anyway frustrating as it is for me..I will not give up till the acknowledge and learn.. The following has left me eating my words a little..which I am happy to do:

Nathan has decided this wednesday he would like to go on a school outing, to Preston Uni on a language enrichment day...This is the first time Nathan has wanted to go on a trip with school since his diagnosis....so as his mam..am punching the air with delight and pride...Good on you Nathan.. Although I had a few little niggles...just mothers worry..deep down I know he will be just fine..and fully prepared for every eventuality..With this in mind...on Friday afternoon I had a indepth phone conversation with the teacher, she phoned me to say the following:

She had been incontact with the Uni...too make them aware Nathan was diabetic... too make sure there was a clean private area avaliable for Nathan to wash his hands and do his injection...that was not a toilet..They do..and have several diabetics on campus.
To make me aware she is a trained and qualified first aider...
She has and is taking Nathans Health care plan with her and my phone number..she is also going to contact me discreetly a couple of times during the day to inform how nathan is..I did say that she dose'nt have to...but insisted she wanted to and it was no trouble.
She asked if there were any warning signs she needed to be aware of etc.
But basically to let me know he will be very well looked after on the day.

As a mam this means a great deal...and appreciate fully what she has done, in going out of her way to make prior arrangements, phoning me for additional information/knowledge of diabetes and the reassurance she has given me..I just wish other teachers and school would adopt a similar approach....Thank you Mrs Cooper..

Great news Heidi,

Preston University - is that what used to be Preston poly? Or am I going back a while now? 🙄

Hope he has a great day, perhaps now they've mastered this about him when he's going out of school they can take on their responsibility while he's at school, rather than him having to spend so much time away because he wasn't 100% for a while. Or is that asking too much?

Hi David,

Yes it used to be a poly, but merged a few years ago with Lancaster Uni..and become part of UCLAN...University of Central Lancashire.

As I said I am totally amazed by there...Mrs Cooper's approach to Nathan attending a school trip...Its a first...on of which I hope is many not only for Nathan, but the other diabetic children which attend the school...of which there are several.

After Nathan's initial diagnosis in Feb 07 it took me 3mths to get him back into school..because of there reluctance to implement a school health care plan.

Many other areas need to be addressed still..eg..allowing him to be left on his own when he is having a hypo...to the fact they have had to phone me twice to tell me they could'nt find him..😡...and also if Nathan complains of feeling in the slightest of feeling unwell..they send him home.

Unfortunately at the end of the day most schools do not want the responsibility of diabetic children..But some schools excel in this....just wish for all children it was the same..
