Am still so confused. Woke up today feeling a little jaded so had some toast and jam and ( levels where a good 6 before I went to bed last night). However tested straight after my toast and I was 14? Have I tested too soon? Do levels go up straightaway after eating? Also scared to go for a run as it raised my bloods on Sunday to 10. Can exercise do this?? Struggling with food also as I just don't know how many carbs I should eat in a day - on 3 Metformin a day. Arrgggh feeling sooo confused over it all was doing so well also.

Look on the packet to see how many carbs per slice of bread - assuming it is sliced and packed of course, there will be the sugar in the jam too, which should be shown on the label, otherwise it means looking up the product on the shop website and weighing.
For most type twos toast and jam is not on the menu.
For most type twos controlling their BG levels by diet the normal regime is low carb foods, not heavy starches and sugars.
After eating meat, fish shellfish, eggs cheese and low carb veges for a while the metabolism can start to get a grip and lower blood glucose numbers start to appear.
The usual time to test is two hours after starting to eat. At first the advice is to try to have no more than two whole number increases between before and two hours after, but once I got down to 8 after meals I did not bother to test before. As I became more confident about being in control I just did a test after a meal, then dropped testing after breakfast, and now, being over two years from diagnosis I hardly test at all.

Hi,
I am taking Metformin x 4 daily. Breakfast was a major concern for me - I found toast was really no good so I went back to the porridge and berries - it does give a reading of about 9 but I was told most people (diabetic and non diabetics readings are high) and to stick with it. I ditched the toast, but recently I have become more adventurous and have reintroduced a slice of toast (Nimble approx 8 carbs) and cheese with a salad at lunchtime. For example today I tested and the BGL was 5.6. I don't have jam. I only test on the rare occasion these days just to see what is going on - wouldn't like any nasty shocks. It does take time and the food diary is so helpful. TBH I am still not sure exactly how many carbs I should be eating but I keep it a low number and treat myself to two chocolate biscuits almost every evening (4 carbs each). Feel free to ask any other questions re the food options. The thing is I hate cooking so once I found stuff that worked I tend to stay with it. 🙄🙄

Hi Sharron, thanks for replying, yeahI usually have porridge with berries and a dash of cinnamon in a morning and I alternate some mornings with a ''dippy' egg and a slice of nimble bread. Nimble is the only bread I eat nowadays. But yesterday I woke up feeling really tired and light headed hence the reason for the toast. I'm supposed to be on Metformin 3 a day but finding if I exercise my levels go really low so am on 2 a day at the moment. Today's levels back to normal (5.8) and that was after wholewheat pasta for lunch and some chilli so I'm just going to eat to my meter at the moment and see what affects me. I'm also wondering if testing right after a meal isn't a good idea! Snap I hate cooking. The hubby does it all! He's coeliac so it makes it doubly hard!
