Type 2
Well today is 4 weeks since i've been diagnosed as type 2 and the changes i've made with diet/exercise appear to be producing some fairly decent results.I am now 1 stone 4 pounds lighter and my fasting average BG readings for the last 7 days show as 6.3mmol/L and post meal average for 7 days is 6.2 mmol/L and i was diagnosed at 13mmol/L.I'm fairly encouraged by this situation, especially the weight loss,i've done a power of walking averaging 6 miles on my days off and feel great for it.I am itching to get out on my bike as cycling is my thing so hopefully as the weather improves i'll be back on the road up the campsie hills where the weight lost will be most helpful.I have cut my carb intake significantly and made for me,good food choices,i'm trying to balance good carbs, proteins and good fats to find a system that works for me,something that will stand me in good stead for the future.
Today i go to hospital for a retinopathy scan and hopefully that goes well. The main thing is that i feel good and energised and i'm determined that this continues as i lose more weight albeit slowly,i don't have a specific target but i was nearly 20 stone so obviously the more weight i lose the better.I realise that this is for the long haul so i'm treating this like a complete lifestyle change.

Hi greenboy990, welcome to the forum!

You've made some great progress which is lovely to see. Feeling great is a really important goal as this is a long term process of maintaining your overall well-being so keep up the good work.

Congratulations on your fantastic achievements so far and good luck with continued progress and eventually maintenance. It sounds like you have a great mindset to tackle this challenge but also find a life balance with it. Well done! Better weather should certainly make things a little easier too both with exercise and dietary choices. I know a salad is much more appealing in warmer weather than the depths of winter... much as I love salad.

I've recently discovered sherry vinegar which is also really good with olive oil as a salad dressing

I'm with you on balsamic but I don't use it sparingly, it features in my daily menu to flavour water as well as salad dressing. Also a good dollop of cheese coleslaw is my other essential salad ingredient. I can take or leave the olive oil.

I've been drinking diluted organic Apple cider vinegar and i'm going to make a dressing with that as well, the sherry vinegar is definitely one i'll give a go.

Good results, @greenboy990, well done!

It's good too that you've got your retinal screening appointment sorted, as that's one of the annual tests we are entitled to, and in current Covid times appointments are hard to come by!

Yes, I used to use ACV in my water but I ran out and hit the balsamic and have rather become addicted to that although I do still also use ACV but can't get the Organic natural "with the mother" version I used to buy at my current supermarket and don't want to shop around in the current pandemic.

Thanks for your comments,i had my first Retinopathy scan today so hopefully all is well.I then went for an 8 mile walk as the snow has gone up here,on the bike for the 1st time tomorrow since December as the weather has been very cold up here.Quite encouraged by the results so far,so onwards i go.

I have a box full of herbs and spices and a row of vinegars and oils - as I'm a supertaster I had better not describe my reaction to flavours and aromas but 'I'll have what she's having' will give you a good idea.
At my first check I had some background retinopathy, but a year later it had gone and is still gone after 4 years, so if you do get that in your results don't worry. Now that you are doing something to control your blood glucose it can fix itself, with any luck.

Hello and welcome to the forum @greenboy990 🙂

I am impressed with the weight loss.

Hello and welcome to the forum @greenboy990 🙂

I am impressed with the weight loss.
I knew that i was active enough so exercise wasn't an issue, cycle and walk 3 or 4 times a week when i'm not working,so it was all about diet for me,i changed to low and good carbs, cut out the sugar which to be honest was my downfall, the amount of chocolate especially roses and quality street i scoffed during xmas was quite staggering, easily 3 tubs over the 2 weeks of xmas add that to the cakes, biscuits and beers, take aways, it was ridiculous.I've now stopped all that completely now it's all whole grains, nuts, berry fruits,so i'm not surprised the weight has come off,so i'm hoping that i continue to lose the weight as i need to lose at least 4 stone, but i'm telling myself this is not a diet but a lifestyle change.

I want to lose 7 stones, as I lost a stone without trying, probably due to health is dire, all underlying stuff but dire. We'll do it this year, must stay positive. 🙂 I agree, lifestyle change.

I cycle about 1500 miles a year as it is and i'll be upping that statistic this year as it's something i've been doing for over 12 years now.Although i am well overweight or obese as the medics call it,my work collegues were shocked when i told them about my diagnosis. This is the year of change for sure.
