Dad has his review at the Drs tomorrow with his HbA1c result awaiting when the results are back during the week. I was sort of hopeful it would be about the same as his previous one as we have worked hard with diet and excercise. Only test in the evenings but those results seemed to stay within his range. Dad had made great progress with his knee and walking yet out of th blue at the weekend the big G for gout hit hard :(

His levels although still in his range but to the high end. It's knocked my confidence a little as I fear it may put his HbA result up despite working hard to prove we are using the strips and acting on the readings we saw.

Today he has improved and his G tablets have stopped for a few days unless it comes back. Just hoping the blip wouldn't affect what the nurse says tomorrow and after the result is through. Going to need to convert the result to make sense as it will be in the new format. I was guessing what it might be but after the weekend decided I will just have to wait and see.......and hope

This will be the first HbA when we have had a monitor for the 3mths just wonder if they will tell us no more strips.

6.4 (January DX) - 6.5 (April severe Gout time) - 6 (August) ? (November)

Hi pippin, I'm sorry to hear that your father has suffered a recurrence of the gout. Don't worry about it affecting his HbA1c - as it has only just happened the effect will be negligible. Do bear in mind also that an HbA1c in the mid-6s is excellent, and you have both done exceptionally well given your dad's other problems. So try not to become despondent or stressed - you really are doing a great job and your dad has a daughter to be very proud of! 🙂

I hope everything goes well tomorrow. I have recently been told that Gout is very, very painful indeed:( I hope your dad starts to feel better soon. Make sure you take care of yourself. Sheena x

Oh I hope it doesn't affect too much Northerner as we have another appointment tomorrow for his INR which hasn't been good recently. Don't think I could cope with two blips on the one day! Your words are very kind and helpful to me as I do worry a lot when things like this happen. We have both tried so hard to maintain diet and exercise although dad is ahead of me with both scenarios. The cold dark nights just don't agree with me yet he goes out walking, well before G appeared.

Dad has been shopping with me now I don't of to supermarkets and it really does help to know for sure what ingredients he likes and can eat. I don't think he has put weight on which the nurse will shout about.

Still have to decide if I will venture there with him as I would prefer he would talk to the nurse without me but dad seems to want me to be there, if my nerves let me! Last night I was very down but dad is showing good progress as far as G goes today. One thing I do know if the pain isn't there dad doesn't pretend as he has a strong character to keep going!

Sheena, the pain is dreadful as dad isn't one to sit down for anything if he admits to needing painkillers then I know the pain is more than I could cope with. Thank you for your support and encouragement about tomorrow. All the oats/dark green veg add too much uric acid which causes this flare up.....can't win as a healthy diet for one condition does this to another :( been trying to even his ph levels in the diets this time.

Thanks to both of you for your support I just hope this week when the phone rings I don't answer it!

Pip,

Your dad's nurse hadn't better complain at all. She ain't there to criticise - she's there to help. If she can't help - then she better admit it and refer you to somebody who can!

Had to say that to my doctor once, long story but the gist was , after I asked him why this that and the other and he said I don't know - I took a very deep breath and actually found myself saying, 'No, you don't - and that's been apparent for quite some time - and neither do I. But someone in the NHS must know at least some of the answers, so please refer me to a likely candidate!'

He didn't know what to say at that, wish I could have filmed his face - so he got his book out and made a phonecall there and then!

I'm sorted now and 'friends' with him again now though so I reckon he did know I was right ..... though I still don't know how I was able to say that !

I loved reading that, that's the fighting spirit coming out, good on ya:D I have become fiesty ( never used to say boo to a goose)over the years.
I'm not normally good at planning something, because I would talk myself out of it 😱 but when push came to shove, I have done it. So glad you got it sorted. Sheena x

I went with dad as I felt it really was important for me to hear anything I need to act on etc nurse was very pleased with all the records we had kept and quite amazed at how much we understood about the importance of diet and exercise.

Dad has lost more weight :( his BMI is almost at the level she would be very worried. We think it is because his diet is healthy and he is maintaining his exercise regime. Both important but we need to find a level when he can do both but gain some weight. Extra protein has been suggested just need to be careful as this can in turn increase the Gout attacks. He will have to snack more although dad loves to eat I will have to try and balance the carbs and weight now.

She normally has to teach patients but think we surprised her today 😉

HbA result should be ready on Friday

INR is still blippy so back again next week

Thanks to everyone for caring, we both appreciate your kindness

It's been a busy day I'm am looking forward to bedtime already!

Sounds like a great appointment! Hope Friday goes well and your Dad starts putting on weight soon xx
