32 Week Update

Thought I'd post an update. Baby boy is measuring as average at an estimated 4lb6oz. Everything looking well thank goodness.
I spoke to my consultant and obstetrician, both very happy with how I'm doing and my control.
I have a c section date for late September and we discussed plans for insulin during the surgery - they are happy for me to remain on my pump and to adjust my target and carb ratios on the day to counteract the increase in insulin sensitivity once the baby is delivered.
I love my consultant. He said I'm the expert when it comes to my insulin and if anyone tries to touch my pump during the c section, to tell them to stop and phone him first!

Thank goodness for HCL pumps! It's made it so much easier this time.

So when you’ve had your section, do you just change the target blood sugar, etc, then? On my pumps, I just swapped back to my pre-pregnancy basal rate (A) from my pregnancy basal rate, but I was wondering how you’d do it on a loop. Is it more complicated?

I was wondering this too, I assumed I'd turn the HCL off temporarily and go back to my old basal rates from ages ago, but my consultant said most women keep the HCL on and adjust their targets and carb ratios. My target is currently 5.5 (the lowest you can set it on the Medtronic) but he recommended changing it to temp target mode (preset at 7.8) the night before and bring it back down a few days after the baby is delivered to give the HCL time to catch up with the new insulin requirements. Also to change the carb ratios back to pre-pregnancy settings. I'll give it a go, as he said this suits most people, but any problems and I'd be happy to stop the HCL and go into manual mode. Hopefully will work out!

I can’t remember the timings exactly but I put my old basal back on literally minutes after delivery. Then once my milk came in, I found I had to reduce my basal a little at some point. I was also able to radically reduce my meal ratios, which was fab, as it was like being cured :D I could eat big meals with hardly any insulin.

It’s good you have the option of switching to manual anyway. I found that the post-delivery was slightly different for each of my three babies, so be prepared! The last baby gave me the most insulin sensitivity after birth. If only I could have bottled that somehow :D

I hope your last few weeks go well xx

Thanks Inka. It will be interesting to see how it works out with this baby! Xx

It is great to read of how they now have data from HCl to be able to offer strategies to manage pregnancy. I look forward to hearing how you get on.

Lovely to hear from you @Lauren. I wondered how you were getting on 🙂

It’s almost scary how similar our journeys are so far! My section is also booked for late September and baby weighs 4lb2oz!

I had one of the obstetricians tell me that I needed to be on a sliding scale for the surgery and my diabetes consultant immediately told me that that wouldn’t happen as control on the ypso is brilliant and she will make sure I can use the pump during the surgery…so pleased!

Good luck to both of you. Great to hear how well you are both doing!

I'm so glad it's going well for you @Evergreen and that your consultant is advocating for you!
Hope these last few weeks go smoothly for you! Xx
