Today I did a bad bad thing

Last day of exams, so I think I'm allowed to let go abit. But this morning I got major bad news from my landlady in which I have 4 days to get everything packed, find somewhere to live and move out. Not fun. I reach for the cigarettes. I know I KNOW I shouldn't. I've been so good with the smoking thing for the past few months its just in one epic moment of weakness. I know it affects the diabetes badly, but I just did. I won't smoke tomorrow, or the next day or many weeks after this. It's my one blip. But I also go out with friends and I drink an insane amount...and now my sugars are up at 16 :(

right now, I hate being diabetic. This should be a good moment, I'm done with uni forever. But its not. I'm really down in the dumps and I wish diabetes could just go away and leave me alone forever

what sort of tennancy do you have??? do you get housing benefit???

sorry to ask these questions but i know for a fact that you have to give some one who is living in your property a reasonable amount of time to leave. if you pay monthly rent it is a minimum of 1 month. if weekly usually 2 weeks. she hasnt got a leg to stand on unless she has been letting to you with out a contract i which place you are a squater so claim squaters rights and make her evict you. i only know this as i have recently started to rent out my old appartment and i needed to find all this out.

as for the housing benefit if you get that they pay monthly so it is a month she has to give you.

get down the council tomorrow and tell tyhem what is going on and see what they will do to help. also see the local cab service.

hope this helps on the housing front. and dont worry about the blip as we all have them 🙂

salmonpuff... if it helps ive been at uni forever and i go out all the time and get VERY drunk. I also smoke sometimes when drunk. We are only human and doesnt hurt to do these things once in awhile. (maybe not as much as i have been doing lately though lol).

Hi Salmonpuff, having 4 days in which to pack up and move on top of exams is pretty stressful. Don't beat yourself up over it, you are human like the rest of us. We all do things we shouldn't when stressed out, I hit the sweets cakes and biscuits rather a lot when I am stressed.

I'm sure it will all be sorted and you will look back on it and laugh, and who knows, the landlady may have done you a huge favour.

hi salmon goodness that landlady giving you 4 days can she do this or does she have to give you more warning??
i used to smoke sociially only so was never a very heavy smoker but i stopped for over 3 years got diagnosed and started up again behind everyones back though as i knew it was bad for my diabetes but that was part of the thrill i did'nt care i was rebelling at being diagnosed since middle of feb i aint touched one again but i know what you mean sometimes we just have those why me days , but like mike says we all have our little blips dont beat yourself up xxx

Yes indeed - I agree with all that's been said. Surely your landlady isn't within her rights to give you 4 days notice?!

As for the other stuff - it sounds like you have a lot on your plate. The last few days of uni are strange enough without the added pressure of sugar levels. As Katie said - you're only human. I drank and smoked my way through uni too. I'm not saying it was a good thing but just think in terms of ok, you had a bad day. But that was yesterday. Today's a different day and it can be better. Don't beat yourself up about yesterday, forget it and think about today. I hope you feel better soon xxx

Thanks guys

I need to find out the contract in a bit and check it through - if I remember right the contract is general wouldn't stand up in court anyway due to the insane amounts of spelling and grammar mistakes in it. But we shall see. According to the landlady she can't let us stay a bit longer because as of friday we are no longer students. And that is a lie. We are students until 31st July. I have a few options for somewhere to live at least and am phoning a lady later on to see if she can put us up for a couple of weeks until we find somewhere else.

If not, we'll be going to my other halfs parents. I have no idea how we'll get our stuff there because there's so much of it.

This is so so so stressful.

Hi Salmon Puff

As she's raised the issue of you being students (or not), this sounds like the sort of issue your uni welfare office could help with. But, as you say, it's worth looking at alternatives. Not what you need just now... Let us know how you get on.

Thanks guys

Despite the accuracy in grammar and punctuation and take it from me, punctuation in commercial contract law is very different to that in normal use, it doesn't matter, its the intent of the contract and the fact there is one sometimes will under the judgement of a court be decided that the terms are unreasonable and statue law overrides the basis and intent of the contract.

This is especially true in your case where a lot of legislation was introduced to give the tenant more rights against the landlord from hell.

Especially considering you're disabled (our old friend the DDA comes to assist here), to simply present you with four days notice is completely unreasonable. While not in direct law, but certainly in pleading your case.

There are exceptions, if you're always late in paying your rent, the condition of the property is unacceptable then there are routes to faster evictions, sometimes where unacceptable or unreasonable behaviour has occurred e.g. dealing in drugs, prostitution etc then this process may be able to be accelerated, but its most unlikely.

Your university student representative/welfare officer should be able to assist you, not least in confirming to your landlord you are still a student, thus negating her argument or else negotiating on your behalf to extend this period - clearly you're only there for another six weeks maximum?

This might be a ploy to clear the property ready for summer camp lettings.

I am pretty sure that however what she is trying to do would be blocked by a court.

I think so too. She's the worst landlady ever, and this place has been condemned so many times as its unsafe. I am very tempted to take her to court over the whole thing.

We may have something sorted on the getting out of here thing at least. I spoke to the lady who runs the lodgings in Weeke not far from here and she says we should be ok to go there for a couple of weeks while we get something sorted. To be honest, I just want out of here, its causing completely unneccasry stress and its not healthy. The bloods have been boinging all over the place which is not much fun at all. I will be phoning the landlady of this place later on and I will be telling her that 4 days is not enough time, I will be saying (although its a bit of a lie tehe) that my Dad is seeking legal advice (He's said that he'll do it once we've found the contract and take a look at it...but there are no dates on it, just says the academic year 08/09 and must be a student) and I will also be bringing up the how completely unsafe this place is with randoms wandering in and trying bedroom doors etc etc.

DO NOT WANT TODAY! ARGH!
