This september we are going on our 1st holiday abroad, me 54yrs and oh 62. I have letter from doctor all about my medication I take, and it is a lot. The letter cost me ?20. What do I put all of my medications and dressing things in? My cpap nurse has written me a letter about why I have the machine. That letter was free. My diabetic nurse is writing a letter free, and also loaning me a spare pump in case anything goes wrong with mine. This is free too. The airline has given me permision to take on 3 hand luggage bags. 1 for cpcp machine and all that goes with it. 1 for all of my diabetic things, and one for normal hand luggage. Ireally don't have any idea of what to store meds in so that they can be plainle seen by security. Any help with this and any other things you think I might need would be great.

I haven't been abroad since I was diagnosed, although I have been on internal flights. I just put my stuff in clear plastic bags, although I wasn't actually asked to show anything - I just told them at security that I had needles in my hand luggage. I would just make sure that everything is easily accessible so that if they do decide to check your luggage it will be easy to unpack and repack. It's good that you have the extra allowance so you are not worried about having to cram everything in.

It sounds like you are very well prepared 🙂 I am SURE you will have an amazing time, it is such an experience to be in a foreign country! My Mum was 60 when she first went abroad - I took her to Italy with a friend of hers. She loved it so much that she went back several times and also went to France. Have a wonderful time! 🙂

Hi spiritfree, first how lovely you are long abroad. With regards to hand luggage pack it in what you feel is most suitable and safe. Don't pack orange juice or other juice. When you get to security you place bags in little containers that then get scanned, at this point you could mention equipment to security personnel (they help with putting bags in containers etc) they will advise on if you need to open bags etc.you will be OK though as you've got your letters x

Have fun abroad!!!

I recently went away, and put all my supplies in a little bag inside my cabin bag. I told security as I went thru that I had needles etc, and all he did was nod! Didn't have to open my bag or anything. It really was no big deal. I was so nervous going thru, and I really had no need to feel so nervous!

Have fun and relax. Even if they do decide to stop you, you have all the relevant drs notes, so you really have nothing to worry about except how much fun you are going to have!

Hi spiritfree, when I went abroad I kept everything in clear bags but left them in my hand luggage, no-one even batted an eyelid at both airports. As long as you have your letters with you, you should be fine 🙂 hope you both have a lovely holiday!

LOL - some of the pumping detritus (!) takes up a deal more room than MDI stuff (spare cannulas, spare reservoirs, whatever) and of course you need to take at least 1.5 times as much as you think you will need, if not 2 x. In case.

I love/hate the packaging on the Roche cannulas I use, because it's so bulky. Mega protective and safe, which is good - but very bulky indeed.

I would try and take stuff in their original packaging where possible - Roche also have a way of packing 10 cannulas in a long rectangular cardboard box that if you tip them all out you can never get them back in the box quite as successfully as they did at the factory .....

Just have a great time.......😎

Thanks, everyone, for all of your help. I am very nervous about the flight, but I am sure I will have a lovely time.

Hi spiritfree, you must not worry about flying. Flying is one of the best bits about going abroad, ask for a window seat when you check in your bags and get your boarding cards. Have fun and remember everything is CHEAPER abroad!

Hey Spiritfree, hope you have a fantastic time abroad though!

When I travelled all my documents were supplied free from pump clinic with all details of what I was carrying and I just showed this to all security and staff when needed. I did though contact the flight company I was going with to explain and so when I arrived they already knew who I was etc and then the portugese security couldn't read it I guess as just put my stuff allowed through. I would not put your pump through the machine though as it is magnetic and will upset the computer chip in it so just detach it whilst you walk through as this is allowed

hi, i have to travel alot for work and i find if you let the security guys know before hand about your meds, they are pretty easy going about it. i was on BA flights for the last 2 weeks and i didnt say anything to anyone about my T1 meds, they didnt stop me or ask any questions. i think that most security people are aware of diabetics travelling. dont worry

Hope you have a fantastic time on your holiday.
