Hi @Susannotsue, welcome to the forum 🙂 We're a lovely bunch here, so definitely ask away. You're also more than welcome to call the Diabetes UK helpline on 0345 123 2399, Mon to Fri, 9am to 6pm, and a member from the team will be more than happy to have a chat!

Hi Susan and welcome from me too.

Would you like to tell us how you manage your diabetes at the moment? Ie any medication and what your current HbA1c is? Also the sort of things you typically eat ie a normal breakfast lunch and evening meal and any snacks or drinks and how active or inactive you are? That info gives us an idea of what may be appropriate to suggest to help you improve things. There is no judgement here so please feel free to be honest. I was a sugar addict and carb monster at diagnosis, so there was plenty of room for improvement. Thankfully I was also quite active which had probably helped offset my diabetes onset. the good people here on this forum helped me get to grips with things, so hopefully we will be able to do the same for you. 4 years on I am fitter and healthier (several long term health issues have resolved with a change of diet) and I have control of my disordered eating, so it has been a worthwhile, as well as necessary, journey. Just a shame it needed the kick up the backside from a diabetes diagnosis to sort it. Still enjoy my food but eat different stuff now.

Hiya and thank you for the kind response.
I am rubbish at remembering to watch my eating and can have a hypo at least once a week!
Brekkie... is uncooked Porridge with seed mix, sliced almonds and blueberries and semi skimmed milk, cup of decaf tea semi skim milk and 4 wee biscuits Aldi version of biscoff!
I dring water all day.
Lunch...sometimes tea and biscuits or flora proactiv on a scone, cuppa tea or small seeded slice of bread toasted and biscuits only if I have tea.
Dinner...chicken stir-fry and small amount of rice or peri peri salmon on one handful of rice with broccoli.
Large Jaffa orange and a small mars.

Medication... Sertraline, Forxiga, Ramipril, SR Metformin, Novomix 30 Insulin, Losartan, Atorvistatin.

I am certainly not judging you about the hypos as I have more than one a week, but I'm working on reducing them.

Diet looks pretty good considering you are on mixed insulin, so obviously need to include some carbs. Must be difficult to maintain focus after so many years. Is there anything particular you struggle with or feel you need to work on?

Aaaw that's scary having hypos as they hit so fast.
Well I do have a sugar addiction...ok.... Cadbury chocolate addiction. I have it once a day and I don't binge on it.
I try nuts, a pear, apple or strawberries to distract myself. I'm also 5'1 tall, 94kg weight.
Thanks for any help. God bless.

I too was a sugar addict and a Cadbury's girl, but I kicked the habit at diagnosis. It needed to be kicked that is for sure! As long as I don't have any, I am not temped even if people eat it in front of me, but once I start, I wont stop. I am an "all or nothing" girl, so it has to be nothing and I really don't mind that now. There are lots of other nice things to eat and those things were clearly making me ill because my gut is healthier, I no longer suffer frequent acute migraines and my joints feel 20 years younger since I cut the sugar and most of the carbs from my diet. I do have a square of dark 70% + chocolate broken into 4 pieces and eaten with a spoon of peanut butter to bulk it out and make it more satisfying but I am not tempted to eat more, like I am with the sweeter stuff. I enjoy savoury and sour flavours a lot more now since I quit the sweet stuff. It had been really interesting developing new tastes.

Welcome to the forum @Susannotsue

Glad you have joined us! And I hope you find it helpful to exchange experiences with others.

Good to hear you want to give your diabetes a little more tlc too. it can be such a delicate and demanding flower!

If you would like to get diabetes a little more ‘front of mind‘ and have a place to share your ongoing challenges, successes and failures, you might like the long-running ‘waking average’ thread, where folks check in every day with updates on how things are going in their lives, and whether or not their diabetes is behaving
