Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi I was diagnosed Type 2 July 18 since then I've had 3 episodes always around 3am of waking up with severe nausea/retching but not actually being sick, breathing really fast, heart racing, cold sweat and being left with pain high in ribs both sides. Each time lasts around 30-45 mins wake in morning feeling like I've done an intense workout. I managed to test sugars it was 15.4 at the time. The diabetes nurse mentioned that glycogen stores replenish around 3am wondering could this have anything to do with it as always been around that time. I've not had the high sugar symptoms like increased urination or thirst recently. Any ideas be welcomed.

Hi Smellmel, welcome to the forum.🙂

Doesn’t sound like anything related to diabetes. These may be episodes of sleep apnoea, when the soft palate blocks off the airway. That could account for the nausea (like sticking your finger down your throat). The fast breathing, heart racing and cold sweat are all panic symptoms - your body reckons you are being attacked. And that will be why your BG goes high - your liver dumps glucose to power the fight or flight response.

You need to take your story to your GP.

Couple of questions (because your GP will ask them): do you smoke or drink alcohol in the evening, and do you have any weight problems?

I know that sounds awfully rude, but I used to be a doctor, so I can’t help it🙂

Hi Mike thanks for your reply. Interesting I did wonder if half of it if was panic, not generally prone to panic or anxiety but the level of nausea is so intense unlike any other sickness I've experienced even worse than what had with Sepsis, (with Sepsis I eventually lost consciousness it had advanced quite far and had been being sick 4 24 hours). I don't drink or smoke but am few stone overweight. I think my BG was high before going to bed as been eating the wrong things. I'm so tired today and still have the pain on both sides high in ribs. If nothing else it was the kick I needed to start eating correct foods again. My BG is only slightly high today after 1 Metformin and eating sensibly. Thanks
