Hi my names vicki my 13yr old daughter Jade was diagnosed 4 weeks ago today
So we're still very new to it all and still learning
She's the first in our family so it was a bit of a shock
Were looking to make some friends that know what we're talking about
Anyone got children around the same age or newly diagnosed or from London area fancy chatting ?

Hi Vicki, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'm sorry to hear about your daughter's diagnosis, how did it come about? What insulin regime is she on?

There is a big learning curve to begin with, and though it may not seem like it now, things will get easier 🙂 I would highly recommend getting a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas - it's not cheap, but it is excellent and covers all aspects of living with Type 1 and is very positive and clearly-written 🙂

How is she doing with things so far? How are YOU doing? You might like to read Adrienne's essential guide for parents of newly-diagnosed children, written by one of our members to help parents understand the types of emotions they may be experiencing 🙂 There is an excellent group of parents who are very supportive and know all the ins and out of things like schools etc. at http://www.childrenwithdiabetesuk.org/ - if you are on Facebook, they have a good group on there where you might be avble to make contact with other T1 parents in your area 🙂

Please let us know if you have any questions! 🙂 Type 1 is a serious condition, but the good news is that it is manageable and doesn't have to stop her from doing anything she wants to do - things just sometimes take a bit more planning 🙂

Welcome Vicki

Sorry to hear about your ur fighter' diagnosis. It is a big shock at the start and there is so much to learn very quickly. The books that Northerner has suggested are excellent, especially the Ragnar Hanas one. I am still using it as a good reference book, and I am nine years into this.

There are other parents on here who will no doubt be along with some help, and do feel free to post any questions you have. People are here to help in any way that we can.

Hi Vicki - sorry to hear about Jade's diagnosis.

For support groups, have a look at Diabetes UK's 'Local Groups' info - there are various 'Parents' groups run all over the place as well as the 'normal' local ones - however of course at the general ones you do get 'everyone' from young to elderly, and all types of diabetes. My first group in Kidderminster - whilst being 'for everyone' was chaired by a chap called Fred Holland - by now quite famous in Diabetes circles - who only got involved in it in the first place because of his own daughter's diagnosis!

Diabetes UK also run all sorts of educational days and weekends for parents and children; kids holidays - all sorts of things!! Have a look at their website generally and see if there's anything useful for you - I'm sure there will be even if it's only the info leaflets about what SHOULD happen for her at school - and how to go on about getting the proper arrangements in place if they aren't already. There's an awful lot more help readily available to you than you appear to have been told about yet - without reverting to Facebook and shouting 'Help' LOL

You ought to also ask your daughter's 'Team' - usually her DSN is the first port of call - what's available in your area - some hospital clinics have spin-off self-help groups of their own.

Have a look at Duk Childrens Events. They are great for kids to go & mix with others, parents go to other rooms & both sets learn. Friends for life etc. Good luck Vicki. I have been T1 for more than 50yrs & I even learn everyday. 🙂
