A change in food regulation means that from today manufacturers will no longer be able to label food as ‘diabetic’ or ‘suitable for diabetics’.

Diabetes UK has welcomed the change and has lobbied for over 30 years for the end of the labels which incorrectly imply a health benefit for people with diabetes and have been seen as essential over mainstream alternatives.

However, analysis has found that because many of the products carrying the label – including jams, ice creams, cakes, biscuits and chocolates – contained polyols, they were not any lower in fat or calories compared to the standard products, so could lead to weight gain. They were also often more expensive than regular products.

Hurrah! :D No more 'diabetic' jam! 🙂 Although the point is that they still contain carbs - the calories and fat have nowt to do with it, really 🙄

Ah! You’re diabetic? Well, don’t worry my dear,
We’ve got all sorts of goodies that are suitable here!
There’s diabetic chocolate and diabetic cake,
And diabetic jam – took me ages to make!

And diabetic sweets in all sorts of flavours –
For someone like you they’re heavenly saviours!
So don’t feel deprived, they’re especially for you!
I’ve heard sugar would kill you – is that really true?

Now you might find the sweeteners are rather emetic,
But you’ll just have to suffer since you’re diabetic…
I should also mention they cost twice the price
Of ordinary sweet stuff, but don’t taste as nice…

What’s that? You’re declining? Well how can that be?
But you can't eat normally, like people like me!
You can? Well, my goodness, I’ve learned something new!
My business is finished, and no thanks to you!
:D

Brilliant news! That's always been a big bug bear of mine!

Great poem :D

This labelling can work in our favour though ...at one place I worked someone kept 'nicking' my milk from the kitchen fridge ...until I labelled it "Jonsi's Diabetic Milk". It was left alone after that :D

Great news and great poem. And I might have to try that one Jonsi, stuff is always going missing from the fridges at work.

Brilliant poem.
I wish I'd thought to label my coffee ljc's diabetic coffee.

But how are we supposed to treat temporary constipation now? It's all a conspiracy by Sennakot, I tell you.
Diet lemonade works a treat for me... 😱😱😱😱
Whereas I can drink diet coke almost by the bucketful and it seems to have no effect! Presumably they contain different sweeteners, and whatever is in the coke I am able to tolerate better!

Actually, it's just occurred to me - how are we supposed to know what to avoid now they're not labelling it? 😱

I don't remember seeing anything labeled as diabetic for over 30 years. Seriously. I didn't know it still existed.

Give it a couple of days and I'm sure it'll all be rebranded as 'sugar-smart', particularly when they realise that'll actually help them reach people who don't have diabetes.

My sugar free Riccola Lozenges has a warning may have laxative effect, but only in small print!

Boots own brand 'diabetic' blackcurrant sweets actually taste extremely nice. They have the added characteristic of being one of the best Dyno Rod sweets on the planet. Put in more industrial terms they really do make you sit 😱 for England

Ooooh, presumably they'll be relabelled and still sold though - I'd like them to use for the side effect when I need help!

As I have ulcerative colitis (quiescent, currently) and chronic pancreatis with steatorrhoea, controlled with Creon, the very last thing I need is unbunging :(.

Mind you, in my youth the most reliable colonic clear out was provided by draught Bass bitter, because the brewery used the local water which had a trace of Epsom salts. Worked a treat.
