Has anyone experienced high readings when prescribed Mirtezepam
Enquiring for Type 2 patient using Humalog and has been under good control up to last two weeks.
Keeping a log and have ketone testing strips, but cannot bring readings down using 20mg Humalogue twice per day.
As high as 23 .....19.....etc
Any advice please

Can anyone advise, please....Type 2 diabetic for 25 years under very good control. Now using Humalog but since prescribed Mirtezepam readings are very high.....23....19.......taking 20ml of Humalog after meals and monitoring for ketones.

Thanks for accepting me.
I have a query regarding high readings since Mirtezepam has been prescribed for the person I care for.
He uses Humalog and usually @ 20ml twice a day this controls his reading well - until taking the above meds.
Does anyone know if this is a problem that is known about? Advice, please....TIA

The medication should come with a a patient information leaflet.
Insulin is usally given in units not ml.

Thanks for this.
I do know it is units (just a bit nervous at being a newly and asking questions)
I read the leaflet and it does say something about this affection readings -
Just wondered if anyone else had had experience of this with this particular antidepressant (I think I read of other meds having the same effect).
When I say high readings I mean 23 and above after administration of the Humalog.
Type 2 has been really well controlled up to now and has gone haywire in the last two weeks of introducing this medication.
We have tested for ketones with strips, and this seems to be all right.

If you are concerned I would phone either his GP or out of hours service.

Hi @pamela ridge 🙂

Do you mean mirtazapine? If so, that’s known to mess up diabetic control:

I’d get some advice from your team. It may be your insulin needs a little adjusting.

I did note you said about taking Humalog after meals. Is there a reason for that as it’s usually taken before meals to give it a chance to get working.

Humalog is meant to be taken 15-30 minutes before you eat so it gets a chance to work before the food hits your system. I suspect you are taking 20 units and not 20mil 😱🙂

Hi Pamela

I see you did not get an immediate response and that may be why you reposted.
Don’t worry I found things confusing at the start of using the forum, especially as it was my first.

Do come back with any extra questions, we are here to help.

Thank you all so much for being patient, I appreciate all your replies and things are clearer now.
Husband has complex medical issues and this issue with the meds really threw me.
I shall speak to GP on Tuesday.
Thank you, once again, for the support today.

Sounds like you could do with a chat with your husband’s GP to see if an alternative medication might be easier on his diabetes management.

In the meantime, as @pumper sue says, it may help to dose the insulin before meals to give it time to get working before the meal adds even more glucose.

Is your husband seeing even higher readings after meals?
