Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi! I’ve been type one diabetic for 27 years with Addison’s disease, I have an insulin pump, I’ve had a terrible time at work at the moment since I’ve come back from furlough and I’m just not myself I’m not bothered about my bloods, I’m just not great form at all, any suggestions on what to do? I don’t want to ring my diabetic nurse I’m scared of them taking the pump off me x

Welcome to the forum @Sjleopard
Sorry to hear that you are struggling at present. I think it gets to us at different times. I recently read about looking at giving yourself a D ‘holiday’ and reducing the monitoring to a safe minimum, then working back to getting things back in track.

How about picking just one part of your management, and focusing on that, such as testing each night and doing a correction along with you evening meal. If you get that bit right it could keep you stable overnight, which is a good proportion of the 24 hours. If that wobbles you know you need to look at some changes to basal rates, but focus on one thing at a time.

I would encourage you to be honest with your DSN. They are there to help you through such struggles, and you won’t have been the first to have had a wobble.

Thank you so much for replying, yes I’m going to try and do that, my bloods are okay and then next thing they just shoot up, I’m just under so much stress in work and I’ve just been diagnosed with a UTI, I’m going to give myself a week and if I’m not feeling any better I’ll contact my dsn. Thank you!

Infection can raise your bloods oftenbefore you get symptoms of one.

Hello and welcome to the forum, from a fellow pumper and Addison 🙂

There's no reason for anyone to take your pump away just because you are feeling c**p. Make sure you take extra steroids to combat the infection this will help no end with the c**p feeling. Also make sure you add some extra salt to your diet with the hot weather.

Like you my bloods are fine then for no reason what so ever it's all change I can go from either needing +20% basal or - 20% and the most frustrating thing is the change in needs is not always in the same spot so it's always work in progress without a day off for good behaviour.
Temp basal rates are a wonderful thing 🙂

With Addison's it's normally the opposite as we don't produce any cortisol to fight the infection.

Welcome to the forum @Sjleopard

Sorry to hear you are struggling at the moment.

It sounds like you are going through a bit of ’diabetes burnout’ at the moment.

Look after yourself, keep yourself safe, be kind to yourself, and allow yourself to respond to your numbers without judgement (they aren’t ‘good’ or ‘bad’ they just are). They are just information. They help inform you as to what to do next... but they aren’t a measure of your worth, of your circmstances, of what else you are facing in your life, or of the effort you are putting in.

As @SB2015 has suggested, sometimes reducing things down to basics can be a useful tactic.

Hope you feel more yourself soon.

Let us know how you are getting on and keep in touch 🙂
