Just a newbie here saying
Was initially type 2 but now been diagnosed as type 1 after a stay in hospital with levels of 33, severe DKA and terrifying memory loss. Feeling sad ☹️

hi, thanks for replying!
Feeling a bit rubbish to be honest ☹️ it’s more the memory loss associated with the DKA that’s bothering me to be honest. It’s a lot better now but I’m still forgetting random things. I’m assured it’s all normal but still scary. My sugars are a lot better now, pretty much in single figures, they were 33 the day I went into hospital with the DKA.

Hi @Emmylou84 welcome to the forum.

Sorry to read you became so unwell following misdiagnosis - not too unusual a story sadly. Hopefully now that you’re going to be treated correctly you’ll start to feel much better, physically at least. I’m not surprised you’re feeling a bit down, that sounds like a really traumatic and unpleasant experience.

There is lots of support for you here, post any time you need to, there’s almost always someone about who can offer you reassurance, answer your questions, share a similar experience or just listen. Do hope you feel better soon.

Hi @Emmylou84 - not good given the circumstances but wanted to join the chorus of welcomes.
It’s quite a friendly bunch here with a myriad of our own experiences of the big D and it’s always good to have another join the throng, so welcome 🙂

Sorry to hear that you're feeling a bit rubbish, but things will get better. It's great that you're pretty much in single figures! For someone just starting out on insulin that's really good.

I've never experienced memory loss from high blood sugars, so I can't really comment on that - but if your health professionals are telling you that's normal and should stop then hopefully that particular symptom will improve for you soon.

As others have said there is always someone around to listen or offer support and their own personal experiences.

If you don't mind me asking, what medication are you on at the moment? Really hope that you start feeling more like yourself soon!

Hi Emmylou84,
I've no personal experience of DKA but don't recall anybody talking about it causing memory loss.

I'm curious as to which medications you are taking because one of the standard pack of medications they thrust on Type 2 Diabetics is a Statin due to uncontrolled BG being associated with cardio vascular events.

One of the worst or possible side effects from taking a statin is 'brain fog'. Loss of memory and concentration making the patient feel like they are in the early stages of Alzheimers.

I could put up with the muscle ache/damage from taking Statins, it was only when I discovered that I was also at risk of higher BG and brain fog I decided to stop taking them.
Note I had a 3x CAB before my T2D diagnosis, but prefer to treat both Diabetes and Cardio Vascular issues by a 'Low Carb Higher Fat way of eating' rather than drugs.

Welcome to the forum @Emmylou84. Glad that you have found us.

Sorry to hear of your DKA. This happens so often when people are misdiagnosed as T2, but you are already doing well to have got your readings down into single figures. DKA makes you feel absolutely rubbish.

Are you still in touch with your DIabetes Specialist Nurse? They will usually help you to learn how to do adjustments to your insulin doses to cater for different situations. Come back with any questions you have. Plenty of help and support available in here.

Welcome to the forum @Emmylou84 (... and now I have First Aid Kit’s song as an ear worm!)

Sorry you have to be here, and to hear about your diagnosis experience, DKA is a horrid business. Hope you feel back to normal really soon, and that your memory glitches resolve.

If you would like a good, practical overview of T1, Ragnar Hanas’s book is well recommended on the forum (no matter how old you are!)
