Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Like all newbies I was diagnosed type2 a few weeks ago. My blood sugar went from normal to 12.0 within 2week I have had readings up to 36.8. The doctor have me metformin 2x500my plus 80mg Gliclazide also a test machine also I was given the link for the website. I've been taking test s but I don't know how many times I have to do the test also I feel ill with it I know all about diets but no about a diabetes diet. I am still in denial as it happened so quick. There's so much to take in. I just know where to start. I've done some on learning zone. Any advice will be great thank you in advance.

Hi Karen,

I’m a newbie too (joined yesterday) and already learned so much from all the members. My BG readings are playing up too

They have explained about Low Carb diet and shown loads of support & encouragement.

I am sure one of the knowledgeable members will be along soon

Sending you all the best

MissDaisy

Hi Karen and welcome.

If you get readings as high as in the 30's again, then get yourself to A&E. Has you doctor given you anything to test for Ketones like strips to dip your urine? You need to do this when your Blood Glucose (BG) readings are above 14 and definitely when they are into the 20s.
Have you lost any weight recently or are you losing weight?
When you say you feel ill, do you have any abdominal pain or difficulty breathing. Does your breath smell odd, like pear drops. If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then go to A&E asap.

In the mean time, drink plenty of plain water as this will help to flush some of the glucose out of your body and avoid foods which are high in carbohydrates.... these are not just the obvious sweet stuff like cakes and biscuits but sweets and chocolate but fruit in all it's forms ie fresh and dried but particularly fruit juice... really do not drink that. Also starchy foods like bread, pasta, rice, couscous, potatoes and especially breakfast cereals as these are mostly just a mixture of starches and sugars so a very bad combination for us diabetics. Something like eggs is ideal... ie an omelette with whatever filling you fancy or a salad with meat or eggs or fish would be good. Go steady on the tomatoes but plenty of salad leaves and cucumber and avocado and help yourself to coleslaw or mayonnaise.... full fat versions are better for us diabetics.

Plenty more suggestions available but the most important thing at the moment is to get those levels down by drinking plenty of plain water and get something to test for Ketones.... You should be able to buy Ketostix from a pharmacy for about £5 if someone can get you some today, but your GP or nurse should have covered that base with such high readings.

@MissDaisy.... it would be a good idea for you to ask for some Ketostix from your GP when you speak to them tomorrow. I don't think your case is quite as serious as Karen's here with BG readings that high but you need to be able to test for ketones as those are the red flag that things are taking a turn for the worse.

Hi Barbara,

I’ll certainly ask as I know Ketones Acidosis is very serious condition. Before Nov I was often out of breath (although Asthmatic) so much so I would find it hard to walk from bed to bathroom.

I will let you know what they say as you might be able to advise again - if you don’t mind that is x

All the best MissDaisy

Hi Karen,

Just wanted to say I know the feeling and when my sugars came down the fatigue lessened considerably. Try to keep at it as it will hopefully make you feel a little better too x I hope soon

I know the pain, Fibro and arthritis will always be there however fatigue should get better I hope. Is your Fibro/arthritis pain under control ? (as well as it can be that is)

Sounds like you have a lot of health issues same as I do - if you need to chat you can PM if you like anytime.

Hope the forum advice & support helps

MissDaisy

It is not surprising that you feel totally shattered with readings that high. Please do keep checking for ketones and go back to hospital if they go up. Do you have follow up appointments with a nurse or GP at your practice. You need to be speaking to someone tomorrow and telling them that your readings are very high. It would be helpful to know what you ate and drank before that reading in the mid thirties. It is worth keeping a food diary along with your readings, so that you can give that information to the Health Care Professional that you speak to. It sounds like you probably need to be started on insulin sooner rather than later but try reducing your carbohydrate intake as much as possible and see how that affects your readings.

As far as I know I don't have any follow up in place. I will phone the doctors tomorrow I'll lei you know how I get on x

Yes very when they come up .... it’s awful and really made me feel bad body image wise - starting private counselling next week.

Do PM if you want to chat further as more private

Sorry to hear your levels have been so high.

It does sound like getting hold of some ketostix might be a good precaution.

Thanks will do. I'm not sure what ketones are so I will do some research.

Problematic ketones are quite rare in T2 I think... but your BG levels have been quite extreme, and seem to have risen dramatically quite rapidly, which may provide clues that you may not be a run-of-the mill T2, but. may need further investigation in case you are LADA or late-onset T1.

Ketones can be a product of starvation, can be used as energy in a ketogenic (very low carb) diet, or more problematically (in undiagnosed T1) ketones can occur in the absence of insulin alongside high BGs where the body cannot access energy from carbs so begins to breakdown fats and protein and turns the bloodstream acidic - ketoacidosis. Which can get serious pretty quickly...

sorry didn't mean to be nosey but since I have had the tablets I have crawling stinging skin and wandered if you're was similarly. Try looking how to PM but can't find how to I'll have to ask my son to show me. Take care x

Hi Karen,

It’s all OK and happy to be open just my whole Fibro journey is a long story & skin condition is a little embarrassing TBH. If we can PM I think it would be good for non diabetic chat, I’ve been trying to find outback how to message you too! 😉

Click on the person's name, the one in blue under their photo or whatever they have in the circle. A window opens up and there's one thing that says 'Start a conversation' - click that and start typing, same as a message on the forum. Just send me one, that simply says 'Test' if you want to to try it!

Thanks for the information I'm going to ring the doctor and I will ask for ketones sticks.

I have checked your account settings @Karen65 @MissDaisy and you should now be able to send PMs
