Mike has 2 daughters. That ages most dads …….

PS. I've known Mike for, err, 'a number of years' so consequently feel reasonably free to be a cheeky mare. My photo was taken 18 ish years ago and I like it cos I still looked like the me I liked then. Did a Zoom committee meeting for something else we're involved with this morning and I sincerely disliked what I looked like. My Passport expires on 30th June and I've always loathed the photo on that too. Currently wondering whether to bother renewing it ...... we don't possess a plain white un-textured wall for starters or even a plain white eg sheet to hang over a door or a picture. Any suggestions?

Passport photos are quite tricky to take at home (though not impossible). They need a peculiarly ‘flat’ lighting, and you need some sort of photo software to get the face/shoulders etc at exactly the right size.... on an image exactly the right size. They are very picky about shadows on the face because of the way the photos are scanned and printed on the passport (plus, presumably the biometric scanning)

With digital booths these days (once they re-open) I suspect you might be better off just trying and retrying until you got an expressionless one you felt was acceptable. But better check they don’t limit the retries first!

Our local post office has rigged up a pull down screen so people can take the photos with their mobile phones or they will do them for you.

Oh Lord! You already had the terrible twos and the terrible teens - sure as hell hope you're not getting any terrible twenties!

whoops, sorry. I was rather waiting for a useful pattern that may emerge after several days: Whilst carb intake and insulin dose may be constant, activity varies. It seems as though the pre-dosing by 15 minutes is beneficial but as with all aspects of diabetes it is a balancing job.

So here we are, I started pre-bolusing on Friday and whilst I feel a benefit its difficult to demonstrate in numbers for the above reasons. I am trying to copy data from Diasend or Libre View that will then be explicit. Sorry to be so slow. Thanks for all your help. 😳

Lol I don't do technical so wasn't expecting loads of data 🙂 just wondering if you had stopped the crash by changing your carb ratio 🙂

without knowledge of insulin/carbs and exertion all this is of limited benefit. what is good is that pre bolusing is effective and I am sure will bring long term benefit. Bless you.

Glad things are improving for you 🙂
Have you invested in the book pumping insulin by John Walsh? It can be found on Amazon and worth it's weight in gold.

Thanks again Sue. I'm not good with books but fine with computers.......🙄
Hi Robert,
the book is set out in easy to read stages, basically you can just delve in for info. Very easy to understand, clear instructions etc, it's known as the pumpers Bible.

You are one kind person! Why would you even bother with me? I'm almost tempted to get the book out of respect for you.
Thank you, and may I turn the table on you and ask why anyone wouldn't bother with you? 🙂
Bottom line is we all started off with little knowledge of pumps and diabetes/insulin usage but we learn from each other so we pass the knowledge on to the next person. As you know in life we never stop learning. Even after 55 years on insulin I still learn news things about diabetes and pumps.

It looks as though bashing the spike with pre-bolusing has the same effect as extra insulin, bolus or basal. Sure it gets rid of the spike but not the post prandial crash if anything other than sedentary.:(

With Humalog and a normal blood sugar, I need to bolus 30mins in advance of breakfast. The best thing to do is to move your bolus time 5 mins earlier each day. You should find the ‘sweet spot’ and when you do, you might even find you need to reduce your bolus amount a little (I did).

Hi Robert
I am not sure if you missed this post above from Inka but she suggests that you may also need to reduce your bolus insulin ratio in conjunction with this strategy of prebolussing. Particularly if you are planning exercise afterwards as that is standard DAFNE guidance.

Have you been on a DAFNE (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating) course or whatever your local equivalent is. It often happens that people who have been diabetic for a number of years don't get referred onto such courses, when it could be hugely beneficial for them. There was someone with 50 years of diabetes experience and someone with just a couple of months on my course as well as everything in between and we all learned from each other as well as the course educators. It is not just about food and insulin but safely managing levels during exercise and illness and alcohol and there is even the opportunity for loved ones to attend one half day and learn about hypos and how and when they need to step in and even discuss how they feel, as it can be quite stressful for partners/carers particularly if their loved one is hypoing regularly. People who attend these courses also seem to get better access to technology. Two of six people on my course were fitted with pumps within a couple of months of the course thanks to input from the staff running it and I have been given the option of one .... so it really can be worthwhile asking about such courses.

As you are on a pump, then if the exercise is planed then you need to reduce your basal 2 hours before the exercise. If unplanned then make sure you have some carbs so you do not crash 🙂 As they say there's more than one way of skinning a cat.

Have done DAFNE and I claim to be carb and GI aware. Totally take on-board the reducing insulin in advance of exertion but this is difficult to judge. There is no measure of the extent of exertion anymore than guesstimating the appropriate tbr and then of course there's being nuts and having two heads.......🙄 thanks again ladies.
