She’s 66 years old I’m living in Yeovil and she lives in Broadmayne in Dorset and it’s been hard for her. We don’t stay in touch very much.

My grandad's almost 88, usually a very active independent man with lots of things to attend during the week so he's finding it extremely difficult too and up here in Scotland we're still in full lockdown, I don't know distances your talking but unless your willing to go and live with her then I strongly advise against going to her house to visit

Okay she lives 7 miles away but she has my brother and my daughter living with her so she's not alone. But she does miss me a lot
You are allowed to meet one person outside your household, in a public space, as long as you social distance by 2 metres. So you could meet her in a local park and go for a walk together, if she’s been going out for walks etc. It depends how she feels about going out, I guess, and how confident you are about whether you’ve been anywhere that you feel you might have been more likely to pick up the virus.

She’s been stuck indoors since the lockdown and she hasn’t been out. She’s worried about going out
Well, visiting someone in their home, unless it’s necessary on caring/vulnerability grounds isn’t allowed. And frankly, she’d be more likely to catch it from you if you went into the house, than she would if she stood at the garden gate, and you remained two metres down the road, (which would be within the letter of the law, I think).

Has she been advised to self-isolate because of a medical condition (what is described by the government as ‘extremely clinically vulnerable’)? Or has she just been being extra careful? Does she have any symptoms like a dry cough, temperature or changes to sense of smell/taste? You definitely shouldn’t meet if either you or she have any symptoms or if she is on the extremely vulnerable list.

Face coverings are more protective for others, not for you. So your wearing a face covering will help protect your Mum, more than it will help protect you if your Mum sneezed

As others have said the recommendations / rules would be to meet in a public place in the open air, and stay 2m apart if you did decide to try to see each other. Being in the open air helps reduce the risk of the infection spreading (but private gardens are not allowed)
