Global report: WHO says Covid-19 'may never go away' and warns of mental health crisis

It’s just a possibility. WHO were warning that there are no guarantees and we can’t put a time-frame on this. Even if a vaccine is developed, eradication globally might be difficult. Think about measles. We have a vaccine for that yet it still exists in a number of countries.

WHO also suggested this could be an opportunity for massive global co-operation to defeat the virus.

I’m not despairing yet 🙂

Well if you think logically flu never goes away does it? So why expect a new virus to just disappear?

The only human disease which has ever been completely eradicated is smallpox. We were almost there with tuberculosis but then they stopped vaccinating all children and now it's making a comeback. It takes at least a year to develop an effective vaccine, many people are working on one now for Covid but you can’t expect it to be ready any time soon, not if you want it to work properly. By the time the vaccine is ready the virus might have mutated and then a different vaccine will be needed. Depressing yes, but that is the nature of all viruses unfortunately, they are always there.

If it was that easy to get rid of viruses then why has nobody managed to cure the common cold?

I actually feel a bit sorry for the government at the moment, whatever they do somebody will complain that it is wrong. I have my own opinions on their latest decisions and don’t want to get into a debate about it here, but whilst keeping people safe obviously has to be the top priority, we can’t stay on lockdown forever either. It's a very tough decision and I wouldn’t want to be the one making it!

Hi Sue, I don't really expect it to just disappear overnight as it's relatively new. I watch the news daily in the hope there will be a vaccine somewhere or sometime along the line, as things are, because of me being over 70 and type 2 and would like to think I could eventually go back to living normal. And as for the flu, well, since there has been a yearly vaccine for this I have not once had it😉.

In good news @Harry W I read that this virus is more stable than the ‘flu so hopefully we’ll get a vaccine that works.

Remember, even if we don’t get a vaccine, we could find treatments that make the virus less able to cause major problems if you get infected. Keep positive 🙂

Thanks for those words of encouragement Inca, brings a ray of hope to an old mans heart. I think being in lockdown for so long is starting to get to me and I'm really missing my grandkids, not to mention I have been living in isolation from my wife who is younger and works in a care home.
We are a lot further forward medically and scientifically these days, but something, no matter how little will be great news for me and everyone else.🙂

That’s completely understandable @Harry W It’s awful to be apart from those we love. I do genuinely think that we can beat this though. So many people all over the world are working very, very hard to do so.

Take one day at a time and look forward to a less stressful future 🙂 It will happen.
