Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Why aren't diabetes UK liaising more with the government on behalf of people with diabetes in the UK. It is becoming increasingly obvious from the fatality statistics that diabetes plays a primary role in the likelihood of severe infection or death after contacting Covid 19. Diabetics should be allowed to be listed as shielded. I am 59 and have had type 1 diabetes for 44 years I feel at least diabetes UK should be looking into more protection for people who have had diabetes for a long period of time.

I'm 70 today Ruby and have had T1 for 48 years soon, and the scientific evidence I've consistently seen and heard quoted is NOT what you say. Hence I do not want DUK or anyone else to spend my financial contribution to their coffers to press Government. Where on earth could you have got official info about what underlying conditions all of the fatalities had, from?

Very early on one of the people who'd been to the ski resort and caught it whilst there, was a T1 and recovered from it as well as the next person without any underlying health probs. Saw him and heard him say that on the News.

Welcome to the forum @RubyP

The letters being sent to ‘clinically highly vulnerable‘ people should have been already sent by now I think, but GPs are able to give a more personalised assessment based on your full medical history, so if you feel you should be shielding you could check with your GP who will be able to let you know if the shielding advice extends to you.

Welcome to the forum @RubyP, I do understand your concerns, as I am terrified at the moment, but as diabetics we are not the only people who are worried, there are lots of other people with underlying health issues who are not on the list to receive the letter, and lots of people on this forum who have multiple heatlth issues who did not get the letter, I myself have type2 diabetes, asthma, impaired kidney function, and liver issues, my 85 year old father who has heart problems didn't get a letter, for me part of the issue was the way they the government initially described lots of us thought we would be on the list, but were not.

I feel pretty sure that the Asthma UK, The British Heart Foundation, Liver charities, Kidney Chartities, Cancer charities, Dementia Charties and all the many many charities and organisations that offer assistance to people with particular health problems are getting the same concerns raised with them.

I know this doesn't actually help you, but you are not alone in your fears, but simply there are too many people in this country with underlying health issues for us all to get these letters.

Take care and just do the best you can in these difficult times. I have not been out of the house in a month, but I do have a key worker husband, so as he has to go out anyway he does our shopping.

Hi Granny Lorraine, thank you for your reply it was helpful to know that I am not the only one panicking. I realise that there are many others in the same boat but this does not detract from my concern that it puts us at greater risk. I have type 1 diabetes and a compromised vascular system in addition to this I have had sepsis twice the last time I was in hospital for over 2 months. Like you I have not been out for a month.. Stay safe.
