Hi all,
Today i was in a 'holistic health care shop' and happened to mention that Alex was a type 1 diabetic. The owner pointed me towards a product called 'taurine' amino acid. He explained that this is deficient in diabetics and that it is considered almost like a 'miracle' drug!
Of course - i bought a bottle and decided to google it when i got home. What a revelation! I havent been conned - it *is* actually a wonder drug!😱

The link i have shown is a very basic description - but if you google it yourself you will find it can help with diabetes, eye problems, heart problems, blood pressure problems, aids metabolism, brilliant for type 2's, helps insulin resistance, protects against cancer etc etc etc....It has also been found to help with glycation!

This chap did say to me that if he had a diabetic child he wouldnt hesitate to get him on taurine for all its health giving properties and preventative properties. It is completely natural and is safe for most people to take. They even put it in baby formula!🙂Bev

Yeah it is what goes into Red Bull and a load of other energy drinks. I'd quite like to see any papers behind that claim.

Doesn't mention diabetes at all here..... you just never can tell from these things.

It also says it is not proven to be energy enhancing in these energy drinks !

Does it, ooo better read it again. Never been called a noodlehead before, quite like it 😛

Oooooooo so it does, quite a few times with diabetic rats !

I remember seeing this a while ago...We asked our consultant about it, but it doesn't seem to be actually definitive -- yet. It is not generally recommended, that is.

There is also something similar about one of the B vitamins -- apparently people with diabetes are universally deficient in it...However, again, this is not yet generally recommended.

I think as soon as the top hospitals/consultants start suggesting these, it's time to jump in and do it. Meanwhile though I have concerns about any OTHER effects that taking anything might have...about which we know very little as yet?

I’ve been looking at taurine supplementation as it’s got a hugely positive impact on BG.

Thoughts?

Has anyone used taurine (3g) a day as that’s indicated for weight loss as well as BG control?

Cat food has added Taurine because cooked meat destroys Taurine and cats cannot make this amino acid in their own bodies.
Humans eat cooked meat but do not have to worry about low taurine levels, we convert other amino acids to make Taurine inside our bodies.

There is also a tendency for people to think that, just because our bodies need this and that chemical, more of it will be better for us. Well, water is good for us, but too much of it can kill (and I'm not talking about drowning!).

For the vast majority of us, just eating a varied diet in the correct portions is all that we need. It is rare that supplements are ever needed. In the immortal words of Dr McCoy, "Just eat some proper food, will you" (or something like that). 🙂

Yes but ... most people get a bunch of supplements via legislated fortification of milk, bread, cereal. Whether or not supplements are necessary/useful obviously depend on individual circumstances. Me: I don't eat/drink dairy, rarely eat bread or meat, and never eat cereal. My diet, with a bit of tweaking, is nevertheless adequate for everything except Vit B12 and like many, many other plant-based folk, I benefit from B12 supplements.

The taurine thing on the other hand looks like woo.

I don't think any one bar vegan's and vegetarians would be deficient.... (or those malnourished)

quote Web MD : Taurine is an amino sulfonic acid, but it is often referred to as an amino acid, a chemical that is a required building block of protein. Taurine is found in large amounts in the brain, retina, heart, and blood cells called platelets. The best food sources are meat and fish.

quote wiki: Taurine, or 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid, is an organic compound that is widely distributed in animal tissues. It is a major constituent of bile and can be found in the large intestine, and accounts for up to 0.1% of total human body weight. Wikipedia

Indeed it is but I was looking at taurine today hence my resurrecting this thread.
