Hi everyone, I’m a Type 1 Diabetic and have been prescribed Metronidazole for my frequent infections. I’ve been prescribed this twice by my GP before and had no problems but taking it this time around i’ve noticed a massive increase in my blood sugars taking them into the 20’s and i’m finding it difficult to bring them down before they’re shooting back up again or going into a hypo!

I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem with this medication? Any help would be appreciated!

What does it say on the patient information leaflet , does say anything about increasing blood sugars. Infections alone cause many to have raised blood sugars.

Hope your bgl has settled a bit now. Its not indicated in the PIL in terms of either side effects or caution to use if you have diabetes, so it may be something else causing the increase in bgl. However, if it persists then do chat to your GP or pharmacist before making any decisions about whether to stop taking them.

Hi guys it is probably the infection and the way the body is reacting to the infection that is causing this to happen. I hope this helps

Nope - I've had to have Flagyl twice, both for infections - no probs.

That was my thought too. Infections are well knownfor playing havoc with BGs.

Hope you recover from the illness soon @georgialily15

Have you made sure it isn’t the insulin or injection sites but trying a new pen and fresh areas?
