Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi guys, I’m T1 generally healthy and currently still working, I work in McDonald’s and serve customers all day every day when in work.
My question is should I self isolate? I am extremely worried and anxious about catching COVID-19 as it could be fatal as we are all aware. A few people I work with have diabetics in their family and some of those family members have been told by employers of different companies to take 12 weeks off with full pay, one even was told by her GP to isolate for 12 weeks and she is also T1.
I know there’s only social distancing guidelines for us just now but am I better safe than sorry? Should I phone NHS 24 for advice?
Thanks

Call your GP on Monday or your chemist, Type 1's aren't known to be anymore likely to catch it than your regular muggle and if your otherwise fit and healthy no more likely to have it worse than the regular muggle, that's what my pharmacist told me last week when I called regarding a different matter, please do not call NHS 24 as they are stretched enough as it is at the moment and recommending you don't use them xx

I shall call my GP on Monday then, I’m more worried of the complications, DKA etc etc, I’m also full of the cold at the moment

If you have a cold you should NOT be at work. You will pass it on and it could be to vulnerable staff and customers who will then pass it on to more vulnerable people. I'm surprised nobody has spoken to you - certainly my friend had a go at the Co-op checkout at the the server who was coughing and spluttering over all the customers, as did some of the other customers. The server just laughed, which was criminally irresponsible and potentially dangerous.

Yeah at the moment if you have a cold you shouldn't be at work, at least up my way in Scotland the majority of employers are sending people with colds home, I know of an employee who had been on holiday for 5 days from b&q and had been suffering a cold, she got to work and coughed once and was sent home even though she was recovering by then, any illness can cause high bg and ketones though so don't relate it just to this, there is no proof that it would happen and as I say my pharmacist told me we could just have mild symptoms too xx

I’m also in Scotland, surprised I haven’t been sent home to be honest, I’m on nightshift at the moment as one of the other managers has isolated due to his kid having symptoms so he’s off until next Monday, such a scary time

Are you staying open but for only takeaway?

Hello guys just to say diabetics are in the at risk group as you have the opportunity to receive the winter flu vaccine. it isn’t that you are more likely to catch really. it is the simple truth that if you catch it it could effect your diabetes and make treating your diabetes more difficult and as a result make you more ill than someone without diabetes.

A good time to brush up on your Sick Day Rules

But (aside from the cold) my understanding is like @Kaylz - that we are not at much higher risk of getting it badly, but just as @Ally beetle says - if we do get it badly, then T1 could throw a spanner in the works.

For the vast majority of T1s though, it would only be a mild illness which could be treated at home.

Fingers crossed you stay well 🙂
