Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi i'm new to this forum. I've been a diabetic type 2 for a lot of years. Up-to this last Xmas i was having real trouble with my very high blood sugars, despite several requests on my part to see the Diabetic nurse i couldn't get an appointment, and also having trouble with my eyes. I know now this was due to high levels. I've embarked on a low carb diet since Xmas, I've managed only this week to get a blood test done HBA1c. I understand that they have more pressing issues to deal with. I've got my results but cant get any help to understand the numbers and wondered if anyone could help? They are 26mmol/mol (20.0-41.0) Thanks in advance if you can help.

Hi @Brid51 - Welcome to the forum. I Just wanted to say hi. Im afraid I cant help with your readings (someone will be along who more knowledgeable than I, soon, im sure, to help you with that). Do you self test at home with a glucose monitor and note down your readings and do you keep a food diary? and are you taking any medication. Had your eyes checked recently? This info will help other respond better to your queries.

Hi, Tee G, yes i test myself with a meter and i have all the readings on my meter, food wise i am trying most days to stay under 20 grams of carbohydrate, and so far seems to be working, well I've lost weight on it so far. i just cant get any help from my health center, but obviously understand the pressure there under i'm the least of there problems. if i can just understand these figures so i'm on the right track. Thank you for responding so quickly. Cheers!.

hi again. Its awful being left on your own like that - I have been too! (its sadly sometimes the case)....Ive learned so much on this forum. I would think 20grm is very low? - Many people on here go for between 50 - 100 a day??

considering carbs : most, if not all veg contain carbs, milk for teas/coffee also has a carb value. have you included these in your calculations? and Portion size will have a bearing on things too. Its all very complicated. I go for the rule of thumb that veg which grows above ground has fewer carbs than the below ground varieties. Also fruit which contain the word 'berry' seems to be less than the more dense bananas/exotic fruits. All this need to be considered. Can you tell me please, what a 'usual' menu looks like for you for breakfast, lunch and dinner including snacks. Maybe we can pinpoint a few areas to tweak? and also, if its not toomuch bother some of your fasting (wake up) readings. Pre meal and post meal reading too.(if you have them to hand).

Hi, my readings for the last 12 days are as follows 6,5.6,6.2,5.3,4.8,7,6.1,5.5,4.26.6,4.7. i follow the Diet Doctor+ on the internet which has no fruit bread, or pasta its mainly cabbage type veg /cauliflower, sprouts, salads greens spinach, and a general mix of meat, chicken, Fish.so breakfast would be eggs various ways lunch might be a chicken wit greens dinner might be Shepard pie with a riced cauliflower instead of potato. All in all pretty good tasting and filling, high fat lots of dairy. Thanks.

Well, it seems you have good steady results there and a complete understanding of the low carb diet. Well done. Now the other things that springs to mind.....are you strips in date? Once a pot of strips is open its only good for 6 months? or another possibility...are you dehydrated. Or maybe coming down with something, a cold? These can have an effect too. Its a case of elimination. Failing all that i think i would contact the GP and make an appointment - you may be getting a little more intolerant where insulin is concerned. Your GP appointment may be conducted over the phone, so have your fact/figure and notes/question to hand and ready to convey to the Dr. (they are doing a lot of those lately, and understandably) But seems worth flagging things up with your Doctor. Hope this helps you.

Do you look at your results online? If not do ask your surgery to give you only access and to the level that allows you to see your test results and history (they have to give you this access unless they have a very good reason). Online you can see all your results and the range and context. An HBA1C of 26 mmol is extremely good and I wonder whether the figure is correct?

Dave B, yes that is where i got the results I've checked again just know to make sure the figures i gave were correct, can you tell me what the 20.0 - 41.0 means? Thanks.

The 20-41.0 could be the normal range with your result (26) being within that normal range. That’s how blood tests are often shown.

That's the "normal" non-diabetic range for an HbA1c test. A reading of 26 is lower than the great majority of non-diabetics would see.

So - great, except it is really quite low and could be a glitch of some kind. I pulled out a 27 time before last, which I never really believed in. With the latest, back up to a believable read in the 30's.

Anyway, I guess the thing to do is talk to yr doc when you can, but fwiw I don't think it's very urgent & whatever the exact number you're probably doing really well.

Hello and welcome to the forum. 🙂
