Yes! I take Metformin, and enjoy a glass of red wine with a meal sometimes.
I think like most things, this is Ok for me in moderation.
It doesn't seem to effect blood sugars much - however there have been the odd occasion where more than one glass has caused a reduction in will power an led to an excess of desert consumption!

Yep. I'm on Metformin and have a couple beers now n again. Never drunk much before so it doesn't bother me.
*note....a double JD straight when I've had a c**p day, it's my go to drink.

Am I allowed to make a Sahara joke? 😉

My issue with alcohol (apart from moderation being the key) is that it is usually laden with calories so is somewhat problematic if I am trying to lose weight. Luckily, alcohol is not something I indulge in regularly but I do have the odd tipple every now and then and did so even when I was on gliclazide and then metformin (but I was not on medication for too long, I must say).

Empty calories at that - no nutrition.
I never was much of a drinker before, nor since diagnoses.
For me a big issue is all the socialising around here is having a drink in a pub or bar.

I already take metformin and drink red wine at weekend but I have just been prescribed gliclicide as well so I wondered whether would cause any problems

Well in theory I spose it 'could' if enough alcohol is imbibed to cause your BG to plummet. Hence the keyword as always id moderation.

Moderation in all things - except laughter! is Alan Shanley's Tag line - and he does tend to be pretty spot on with T2 ! (He also regularly enjoys good red wine, I have to add!)

Is there anything in the PIL info leaflet in the box @chaoticcar?

I take both and drink alcohol, not loads a couple of pints of beer or cider in a week, some weeks none at all. I've never really noticed any effect on blood levels, but never really tested. I only drink alcohol when eating. Maybe I need to experiment! :D

Just that low blood sugar may occur if you drink alcohol I just wondered how others have been affected by alcohol while taking metformin and gliclicide
Carol

Yes alcohol has that reputation for lowering BG because it keeps the liver so busy processing the alcohol that it doesn't trickle the usual level of glucose out. But some alcoholic drinks (beers, ciders, lagers, non-diet mixers etc) are very carby so you can have the double whammy of a big spike, followed by a crash later. Fun times!

The odd glass of red (as long as it is not one of those silly goldfish bowl glasses) is not likely to make much difference particularly if you are having it with a meal. If you were having a couple of glasses before bed, that might be another matter. The important thing is that you keep your wits about you so that you have self awareness and test yourself if you feel a bit fuzzy and definitely test before bed and make sure you have testing kit and hypo treatment next to the bed in case you need it through the night. As with everything diabetes, we are all different, so you really need to try it and see how you get on.

I only drink red wine !!!!

Red wine doesn't seem to raise my BG at all (at least in the quantities I have it...)

Everyone's BG lowering response to alcohol will be individual, as with most things diabetes-wise!

I enjoy a regular glass or two of red. I also enjoy a wee dram of whisky. Doesn’t seem to upset my apple cart, diabetes-wise, but it does add to the calorie intake. A little bit of what you fancy does you good, as they say. Who am I to argue? :-}

I have a couple of small glasses of rose a week but I only like it when I’m cooking, not when I’m eating. If I’m out I like a Bacardi and Diet Coke.

I need all the calories I can get so that is not a problem for me🙂 !!
