Living with a visible disability long term (Charcot foot -collapsed ankle joint and foot bones in a plaster cast for years and on crutches) makes me so grateful people can't see my diabetes.
My mind bogles at some of the comments people see fit to make because I have my leg in a cast. I've written about it before but I got another batch of comments in town today.
"Did you do that skiing" ? My stock answer is to say my bones break on their own as trying to explain Charcot foot would blow minds. Today I was advised to drink milk- I haven't got an ankle joint, my leg is held on by screws and plates,I've been told to have an amputation, a pint of milk really wouldn't touch the problem
'Had I thought about taking calcium'? - I've tried every drug/drug trial/drip infusion etc to try and get my bones to grow. I like optimism I really do and I try to be hopeful but after 20 years of fractures I have indeed covered all bases milk/calcium/supplements and other wise.
Another lady I've never met before asked me if I'd been in a car accident, I said it was a complication of diabetes ( I'd been out a long time by now and was losing my good humour!). I knew as soon as I'd said it I should have confirmed it was indeed a car accident and steered well clear of mentioning the D! She said "The sweets thing" - oh yes that's the one!🙄 I just love pick'n'mix that much my bones have collapsed.
I am so grateful that diabetes is invisible to all those people out there, just imagine the level of miracle cures, blame etc that would be freely handed out. Thank you for listening 🙂
