Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi I'm Vickie I'm 29, I'm a type 1 diabetic and I was diagnosed coming up 4 years in January..
Still don't seem to have any control over my diabetes. Mainly because I eat alot of bad food, and I'm not so great with the carb counting.
My sugars are either extremely high or I'm having hypos.
Im seeing my diabetic consultant soon so fingers crossed things will be better after that.. I'm still so overwelmed with it all, does that ever go away?

Hello :D Here to support you in making small changes in the right direction. Is there anything practical we can help with or just general moral support?

Yes. Though every now and again something changes (whether one's own health situation or different medication or whatever) so there's always change, and sometimes it's disruptive. But day to day, most of the time I feel I know what I'm doing. There's always bad days when nothing seems to work as it should, but they're unusual now.

Hello Vickie, pleased that you have joined the forum, There are plenty of people here that have the same experience as you and will try to help. There is a lot to deal with and many of us get overwhelmed from time to time. I hope the meeting with the diabetic consultant goes well, and that you find a good way forward.
There is a lot of information available in the various sections of this forum. A useful place is the to look on the 'Newbies Start Here' Tab and at the top is 'Useful links for people new to diabetes' and as the Thebearcameto says, please ask whenever there are any particular question or you just want to share situations.

Ok that's good to know. I just sometimes feel so overwhelmed with it all, glad to know it does get better. 🙂

Great I'm glad to hear this, I don't know anyone friends/family that are going through what I do, so it's comforting to know I have everyone here that does 🙂

Hi Vickie and welcome to the forum 🙂

I'm 28 (just past) and just passed the 3 year mark of my diagnosis, it does get easier, I've been through a lot (related eye problems less than a month after Type 1 diagnosis, an eating disorder followed at the beginning of 2017 etc) but I'm still here, you'll have good days and bad days but hey we're here to help 🙂
xx

Yes you do have friends that are going through what you are - there are hundreds of us on this forum!

Don't be afraid or embarrassed to ask questions, I'm sure that someone here can help you, and give you some encouragement

Wow you have been through alot, how are you coping with it all at the moment? I suffer with anxiety and panic attacks and life decided to throw type 1 diabetes at me.. just feels so tough sometimes especially when I don't have anyone to relate to, that's why I'm glad I've joined this forum. 🙂

Ok that's good to know.

I should have said "usually". Right now, at least, it's OK for me most of the time. But I'm aware some people have a harder time with things for a variety of reasons. (About half of people have a monthly variation in hormones which change things, and I don't have that to deal with.) But usually I think it becomes easier to deal with.

Pleased to hear it. Right now I'm all over the place with it. I think I need a routine that suits me but as yet haven't figured it out.

Things are going ok at the moment thanks for asking 🙂 I needed lasering to both eyes for proliferative retinopathy last November as well all despite good hba1c's and as they don't deal with these at my local hospital if I cant get a lift its a 6 hour round bus trip 🙄 i was every 3 months for check ups since 2016 so that took its toll but the last twice I've had 6 months so that's a good point 🙂 yeah I suffer anxiety too and god it takes some courage to go out on my own at times but I can so that's the main thing, yeah I don't know anyone my age with it either so it is tough, do you have good support around you though? xx

Oh really, has the lasering helped at all? Ah god that must of been hard with getting there all the time. Yea my mum and partner are amazing support but I feel like unless u have type 1 diabetes u won't fully understand what I'm going through. So it's nice to talk to people who do. Do u ever feel like it's a burden?

It wasn't affecting my vision but the check ups went well so I assume it worked, macular oedema did however affect my vision and yes the eye injections made a huge difference they truly are amazing, I know completely how you feel, my partner has a lifelong condition too (epilepsy) so while he can sympathise what its like to have a condition he'll never know or understand how draining diabetes is as it is a full time job, at times yes, my diagnosis stopped us starting trying for a family again (miscarriage in 2010) as we were planning to start trying in 2017, the constant weighing of food and carb counting can be stressful and also the fact nothing can be spontaneous anymore but it has all become 2nd nature to me now and I think it would feel odd to not have all of that now, if you have any questions please do feel free to ask xx

Pleased that you have found the forum Cupcake. I have learnt most of what I know from others on here, and they have help to simply get on with things more. You have already decided that you want to get things to fit with your lifestyle, so it may help to talk with your team about choosing one thing to sort at a time, whether that is finding ways to help you with carb counting, or testing more often. Have you been on a course to teach you carb counting. I did a Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating (DAFNE) course which was great for that, but also a chance to meet others with T1. Up to that point I only knew one other person. Some of us are still in touch now.

Keep a watch on here for any forum meet ups that pop up. It is good having a chance to be with ohers, where testing, carb counting, ... are just the normal thing to be doing.

It is indeed hard for people around who do not have T1 to understand it all, but one things that I took a while to do was to start to ask for help, and also to explain what I was finding difficult. I was sort of expecting my OH to mind read, and unfortunately that is not one of his skills. Know find I can ask for help and he is a lot more aware of what he can do to help.

Please ask absolutely any questions you have as they crop up. As I said I have learnt so much from others on here.
