Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
May I ask if anyone has had changes in vision since diagnosis of type 2?
I was diagnosed just over three weeks ago following an A1c of 95. At that point I was desperately thirsty and urinating often with lots of cramp particularly at night. I had oral candida and vision was incredibly blurred. I have modified my diet and the thirst and constant urination has ceased. I also have noticed that my distance vision has improved massively. My near vision had been good recently but has now worsened quite a lot. I mentioned it to my GP and she has said it is probably the diabetes. I started metformin liquid five days ago (500mg with breakfast). The vision thing is freaking me out a bit and wonder if anyone else has had this please?

It’s it’s good to hear that you distance vision has improved, don’t worry if it worsens a bit, later on.
It’s to do with the shape of the eye changing and going back to normal as your glucose levels go down.

My vision went very blurry it took around a month to improve .
I bought some very cheap reading glasses from a pound shop , enlarged the screen on pc etc

Thank you very much for your reassurance Lin; I'm really not feeling myself at the moment and feeling very tearful.

If it gets worse, you might be having a bad reaction to Metformin - I was verging on suicidal taking it and Atorvastatin for a few weeks.
Is there some reason you were prescribed it? If you had changed our diet and were seeing lower levels of blood glucose, and had lost the symptoms of type two it seems strange to start to take it.

I am glad I was able to reassure you, it would help if they warned us that this could happen.
I am sorry to hear you are feeling so down. Cry as much as you need to.
Is it the worry about your diagnosis do you think

Hi Drummer, I was prescribed metformin because a recent blood test had shown a high Ac1 and I was invited to the surgery to discuss management. Feeling very anxious about the whole thing

It is perfectly natural to anxious about this. I promise It will get easier.

Not everyone can control this condition without medication, some people are fortunate that in that the changes they make enable them to avoid medication, others need it to start off with, then are able to come off meds others like me weren’t able to.

If you feel able and would like to talk to us about what is worrying you about diabetes we may well be able to help .

Blurred vision is the only symptom I have. Scary. :( Gets worse if I don't keep to low carb.

Being a newly diagnosed diabetic can be very overwhelming at first, but you have already started to make lifestyle changes which will help. Blurred vision is a common symptom of diabetes and one of the questions I was asked by my GP, the Practise Nurse, and my dietician. Your GP should have referred you for a retinal scan which will thoroughly examine your eyes - if not please ask for one.

Changes to vision are quite common with fluctuations with blood glucose levels. This isn’t the same as the possibility of long term damage to eyesight which generally only happens over quite a few years.

As @Ljc says, blurriness is generally due to changes in the shape of the lens because of the way the fluid is different at higher glucose levels. This blurriness generally settles over a few weeks when your blood glucose gets more into range.

Hope yours clears up soon, and you begin to feel a bit more yourself. Feeling a little overwhelmed is perfectly understandsble following a diagnosis with a long-term medical condition. There can feel like a lot to learn. But you will get your head around it really soon, and many members feel that their diagnosis forms a real positive turning point for their health and wellbeing - with access to lots more checks and a far greater understanding of the nutrition and level of activity that suits them.
