I have just been diagnosed with type 2. Hopefully, it will be controlled with losing weight and diet. So confused what |I can eat. Feel really miserable and shocked at the moment.

Hi MargaretRose, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but please don't worry! Although it is a serious condition, it can be managed very well, and many people find that the adjustments they make result in them actually feeling happier and healthier than they have done for quite a while prior to their diagnosis (it's true, there are hundreds of them here on the forum! 🙂 )

I would suggest starting by reading Maggie Davey's letter, which will give you a good understanding of how to approach things 🙂 I'd also suggest getting hold of a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, which is a very positive and helpful guide to these early weeks and months 🙂

Hello MargaretRose. So good that you have joined the forum, there is plenty of help and support here. I can still remember that big shock of first diagnosis although it was over 8 years ago, it really knocked me off my feet.

Please try to stay positive as there are many good solutions, but there is no ‘one size fits all’ and you need to find what right for you, and if you follow the pointers Northerner has suggested you will get some good ideas, and start to learn what healthy eating and exercise plan is for you.

For me it has been a low carb diet, and increased exercise, that has worked, I cut out all ‘white’ carbs (white bread,rice,pasta) and mainly eat fresh fish and poultry and have learned to love vegetables (although that took a while!). There are many good recipes to make these things really tasty.

It does all take time to find what’s right for you and adjust your lifestyle, but please be patient, it will be very worthwhile. I now have a much healthier life style, and have more energy and ‘zest’ for life.

I'd say you have those the wrong way round - control your blood glucose levels as a matter of urgency.
The easiest way seems to be to find out what you can and can't eat by getting a cheap meter and strips and testing after meals. Once blood glucose levels fall weightloss is so much easier - I lost three stone without even trying. I thought that the elastic must have gone as my clothes kept slipping south, then my trousers just dropped to my ankles a couple of times - fortunately at home, but even when my weight loss stopped I kept shrinking as I must have been regaining muscle. I was strong enough to go back to work with knitting machines at the age of 67.
