Hi all,

A friend has just given me a Vonshef 07/036 soup maker, (an unused & unwanted gift) I took it as I had been thinking of having smoothies for breakfast - I had type two, lost 2st and it is in "remission" - I am not into eating a breakfast, so felt a smoothie might do the trick.
My questions are, Can you offer advice on using this "soup maker" and are the smoothies a good idea?

Do you test your blood sugars? the only way to tell if they are a good idea is to test before and then again 2 hours after and ideally having no more than a 2-3 mmol rise

Of course it depends on what you plan to put in your smoothies as quite a lot of fruits are high carb and sugar so can have quite a huge impact on blood glucose

Did not get as far as needing to measure them. To lose weight I just cut out the bad fats, swung over to Brown bread,rice Wholemeal Spaghetti etc, I don't take sugar knowingly, rarely use salt, and on a fairly regular basis eat cereals - weetabix etc.
My problem is that I do not always feel like eating in the mornings, and tend to have just the one main meal, with a light supper later, my thinking was, that smoothies might bridge the gap??

Quite a lot of what you are eating is quite high in carbohydrates which turns to glucose in the body causing bg spikes, the only way to know if they are spiking you is to test your bg before eating and again 2 hours later, there are many Type 1's that have the small benefit of insulin that don't touch cereal as no matter how far in advance they inject they still cant stop a huge spike in bg, many Type 2's have had to reduce or completely eliminate many things on your list due to spikes in bg as that's what starchy carbs like bread, pasta/rice, potatoes etc too

Type two diabetics generally find that they need to eat fats to replace the carbohydrate which is doing them harm.
Once they regain normal numbers they see weightloss, so chasing that is not really necessary.
As you are classed as in remission and still eating the carbs you might find that blended soups and smoothies are OK at least as far as your Hba1c being low, but that is only an average and I'd advise avoiding high carb ingredients if you are not testing, as when I tried a smoothie with only salad stuff in it, my blood glucose levels shot up. The blending ruptures the cell walls and makes for rapid absorption.
 
Kaylz, Sorry I were referring to blood sugar readings.
The replies have given me more knowledge on the subject than I started off with, I am now aware that maybe infrequent Smoothies are ok, and as I alter my diet often, I'm guessing all is ok.

I understand that's what you were referring to but I'm one that thinks any diabetic should test otherwise you don't know what's going on xx
 
The simple answer is if you put low carb stuff in the smoothie, you’ll get a low carb smoothie out. What smoothie makers do is completely shred any fibre, which rather destroys the point of eating fruit and veg.

I’d stick to soup.
