Hello I’m new to this forum and need some advice. 12 year old son has HBA1c of 42. Should I be concerned and make an appointment with the dr? Strong family history of type 2 diabetes. Not overweight, plays sports 5 times a week and has healthy diet. Any advice welcome.

Hi Narinder, welcome to the forum 🙂 It shouldn't be a concern at 42, although it is probably towards the higher end of 'normal'. Who ordered the test, and why?

Hi Narinder, welcome to the forum. Can I ask why your son had the test? Was it done through your doctor?

Yes it was done through the dr as they were querying water infection as he was having a few issues. However that came back clear. When I rang the drs at the time they said bloods fine nothing to follow up. Only come to light through a letter regarding diabetic prevention program.

It’s not worryingly high but more the higher end of normal, cutting down on carbohydrates should pull things back, especially bread, pasta, rice and potatoes along with the obvious sugary snacks etc. Have a chat with your doctor to see if they plan to repeat the test.

In an article I read recently 42 is the bottom end of Pre-diabetes. I would say follow the changes suggested by CathyB. It may also be worth checking for a fatty liver. A friend has a BMI of 23 yet had one do his doctor wants him to try and get in 21/22 range to see if it improves things. Had he had a cholesterol check?

This is a 12 year old hear I would go and discuss your concerns with your Dr.

I too would discuss your concerns with your Gp. Having said that an infection can raise blood glucose levels.
As their is a strong family history of T2 I suggest asking for another test to confirm whether or not your son is is in the ore diabetes range 42 to 47 , I hope the next test shows he is well below that.

Please let us know how you get on

Many thanks for all the reply. I have an appointment with the dr tomorrow. While I was pregnant with him I did have gestational diabetes and was insulin dependant. Since then I have been fine myself however I do go for the year check of my own HBA1C.

Please let us know how it goes.

Saw the dr today. Repeating HBA1C depending on result possible referral as strong family history of diabetes. Advice to remove all refined sugar. Weight and height all good. Thanks for all the advice.

Would he be amenable to the occasional BG finger prick test? They could be worth doing to see how different foods affect things. Also maybe carb counting but I wouldn't like to guess at a figure for a growing teen. In my teens on insulin it was 250gm CHO but these days 125gm to keep my waist under control!

Glad you you have got medical advice and a plan,

Please remember there is no difference between refined sugar and carbs when it comes to the impact on our blood sugar
