Type 2
Hello everyone (waves),
I'm very recently formally diagnosed type 2 though most likely I've been carrying it for years - really strong family history and eating dangerously. Attended a midlife health check knowing this was coming and to be honest it's a relief; I have a lot of work to do as readings v high, so after this weekend I shall be getting to grips with blood sugar readings and metformin in increasing doses over the next 4 weeks.

Stuff I've discovered that I didn't know before about myself :
- I *love* cauliflower rice, cauliflower hash browns and kale - never tried any of them before
- I *can* walk past the local pic n mix shop without insisting on going in

So I'm ready for this journey. Bit worried the pic n mix shop will go out of business without me though.

Hi. Welcome to the forum.

You've come to the right place. Plenty of members managing their diabetes day in, day out and always on hand to offer advice.

You say you have to come down from very high readings. From where exactly? I was at 114 when diagnosed in March so I've had to come down from very high too.

Martin
Hi Martin

Mine was 110 so not far off where you were in March, my latest fingerprick was 23.3 on Friday teatime so it will be interesting to see what happens when I start taking Metformin tomorrow! I'm quite looking forward to it really. Have been working on cutting down carbs for a little while so hoping this will be the start of a better phase. Hope your readings are better now.

Welcome CV

My blood glucose rocketed after a long period of stress prior to that I was diet controlled, BG shot up from 52 mmol to 86mmol but with lower carbs and portion size and exercise (+metformin) after 3 months its down to 65mmol I am hopeful after another 3 months it will be back down to 50s or lower :D

Keep up the good work with your diet and ability to keep on walking past the pic n mix 🙂

Thank you - it's helpful to see it's working for you - and no sweets so far today!

Good for you no sweets today :D

I have had 1 choc biscuit 😛 so I've been bad.

It is mainly the carb portion size I think and doing that - weight loss automatically happens, both lower carbs / portion size and weight loss bring down blood glucose levels :D I may do better if I preferred cucumber to a choc biscuit :D 😉

1 chocolate biscuit isn't a packet of them - that's restraint that is!

Hi again

Yes, 23.3 is very high. I started at 20.5 but am now averaging 5.6 first thing in the morning and 5.4 two hours after our evening meal. Hard going for a while but once I'd settled on a low carb diet that worked for me my numbers started to drop. I've even been allowed to stop taking my Metformin.

My follow-up Hba1c in May was 56 and I have another one next week ready for when I see my DN in two weeks, so hopefully it will be another drop.

Keep us posted on how you're doing.

Martin
Thanks, it's really motivating to see how well people are doing. Have just set up my glucose meter for my first stab by myself at 5am on a Monday morning!
