Relationship to Diabetes
Gestational
Hello, I am newly diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes (at 29 weeks) and did my first blood reading yesterday. Fasting was 5.30 and then one hour after what I thought was a good breakfast (some Greek unsweetened yogurt, golden and delicious apple and some peanut butter), my levels were 11.8!!! That seemed very high given I paired carbs etc. Or was it a bad breakfast afterall?

If the yoghurt was a low fat one it could be quite high carb, apples are high carb too - and you might need to evaluate the 'some' amount of carbs from peanut butter referring to the information on the jar.
I don't know what pairing carbs is - but diabetes is usually rather unforgiving if you eat foods which are high in carbs.
Although i was never diagnosed during pregnancy - I ate low carb foods all through my first, unremarkable pregnancy I still had a baby over 9lb and was always asked about my dates and the possibility of twins. Luckily my diet was normal for me by then, so lots of low carb stir fries and salads were part of my usual diet.

If I'm correct the pairing of carbs is balancing carbs with protein, is that correct?

As Drummer says its better to have full fat yogurt as the fat also delays the absorption of carbs, apples are quite heavy carb compared to the likes of raspberries, blackberries, strawberries etc, are you weighing your stuff to find out how much carbs you are actually consuming? Could you maybe try something else relatively low carb? eggs? meats? cheese?

xx

Hello and welcome to the forum. 🙂

I think there are 30 carbs in an apple so I don't eat them, but would like to as I believe in that old an apple a day keeps the doctor away.

You can't go wrong with eggs for breakfast. Also, I'm surprised to learn lately that it's best to have one's 'big' meal at the end of the day rather that at the start like I've always believed. Some people deal with carbs better in the evening. I can't get my head around this but then again I still can't get my head around the fact that eggs and bacon are better than allbran and milk! :D It just doesn't seem right. It's hard to change the thinking and habits of a life time.

your quite misinformed with that one Ditto, of course it depends on the type of apples etc but take for instance a gala apple which has 11-12g carbs per 100g of product, there are no apples weighing almost 300g lol

Knowing me and my big portions I bet I could find one. :D

I have noticed some yoghurts do have quite a high carb level. I buy the Fage natural yoghurt at 3g per 100g. I have the fat free one at that level of carb. It is OK for me but I suppose you would have to check against your meter to see if it suited you.
