Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
hi everyone.
I have had type 2 diabetes for quite a few years now. I started on diet control then went on to metformin. First of all 1 in the morning , then 2 , then 2 morning and evening.
Suddenly it’s stopped working. The diabetic team started to raise the dose , but it did not change my blood level, and it suddenly dawned on me that it just was nt doing any good.
I stopped taking anything and the levels never changed. The diabetic nurse agreed that the metformin was doing nothing. I changed to another one, can’t remember the name and still no change. Looking for answers?

When this happened to me I was put on insulin to get my BG levels down and stable.
I have now been off the insulin for several months and my levels continue to be stable.
So perhaps insulin would now be appropriate for you.

Hello @Gilly149 welcome to the forum. Firstly try not to panic as their are many other medication options available, tablets, non insulin injectable and of course insulin. I have been on insulin a few years now after many years on Metformin and other tablets stopped working. Please don’t fear insulin if in the future it should be mentioned to you, but as I said earlier their are many other medications available.

I have a couple questions for you.
Are you monitoring your own blood glucose before and two hours after meals or just having the Hb1ac done at intervals,

How many carbohydrates do you normally have a day.

Their are other types of diabetes one of which mimics T2 at first , it’s like a slow onset T1 which initially responds to T2 meds , LADA (latent autoimmune disease in adults) its actually quite rare and a lot of Gp nurses/doctors may not have heard of or come across it. don’t worry it’s no worse than any other type of diabetes. Their are some blood tests that can be done to help determine what type. others here will know what they are called.

For some of us T2 does progress no matter how hard we try to keep it under control.

I have over the years reevaluated what I eat, and readjusted.

Thank you all for your help and advice.
It was gliclazide I was changed to but no results.
I have Crohn’s disease and an ileostomy, and because I’ve had many ops , now I bit short of intestines.
I can’t answer the technical questions. All I know is I’m careful what I eat, I think I have a good healthy diet but I’m losing weight slowly but surely. ( now 55kg)
I have also stopped absorbing calcium and magnesium from my diet and take supplements. They are chewable and I have to take them at times in the day when my stomach is empty, to encourage absorption.
It’s really getting a bit difficult to deal with
