ok, while this isn't totally diabetes related I simply want to moan. I am watchful Managing my diabetes, my knees and weaken muscles are improving with all the exercising and now it is time to deal with my shot to pieces thinning hair with rat tails hanging down. Hence will make an appointment for a thyroid blood test...although everyone has an opinion It might be stress related or could be lack of iron in diet. Hey ho. Once that has been sorted it will be time to find a sympathetic hairdresser who is able to do something with the tressess....Never ending .

A good friend has been struggling with hair loss for a good many years (initially put down to undiagnosed Hypothyroid but it turns out some prescribed medications which she'd needed to take, ISTR certain BP drugs can do it too if you're prone) and eventually bit the bullet and invested in a wig - but you can't do that with eyebrows so she still always has to pencil them in (very short individual strokes) every single day. She was also advised to try Minoxidil but to use the 'Men's' variety - and it has actually made a difference but it will never completely sort it.

NB. No idea whether it would work for anyone else or whether there are any contra-indications.

I've never said this to her but she had also been having her hair coloured for donkeys years and to my mind even though OK nobody likes it when they lose their hair colour either - when you have a hair loss prob surely the first sensible thing to do is stop using as many chemicals on it as you can - even though yes it does look a ruddy mess for a lengthy period to begin with until the 'dyed' bit grows out a bit and you can have uniform grey by having your hair cropped. I know how ruddy quickly a crop grows out too - as you can see from my avatar photo! Every 6 weeks to the day, like it or not - so it gets expensive!

HI, Many thanks for the support. I have coloured my hair but stopped a while back and as u said it looks so awful I tend to ignore the mirror. I think my poor hair needs a break. I had a chat with the hairdresser this morning, all I could do stop myself crying. Will c GP next week have the throid test etc, let him see the rats tails and get the chopping later in the week. amazing I handled T2 diagnoisisince, carpal tunnel, weight loss and torn muscles but the hair thing is the most painful😱.

You really not joking. As I posted to Jenny I was able to handle so much last year, but the hair is the most painful. TBH I think it is more me than anyone else but even so...hopefully a decent cut will make it look better.Even if I can'tell remember the last time I had short hair. I can'tell even blame the diabetes for it! Hope u r feeling loads better 2 day:D
.

Good luck with the hairdresser.
Thank you. Had a brief chat with her 2 day. She has probablying seen it and heard it all b4. But she was sympathetic, probably because she could see the tears welling up. Hope u r feeling a little better and confident today.🙂

I now have a pixie cut, after 50 odd years of long/medium length hair. Just has to admit defeat, and I have to admit that a) I really like it now, and b) it’s so QUICK! Literally 5 mins in the shower, towel dry it and I’m done. Bet you look fabulous when yours is done 🙂

The eyebrows are another matter, they’re so obvious, and I feel like my face looks like a pink egg without them, but they’re such sensitive little flowers that if I put anything on them they shed faster than a Christmas tree in August 😱 Tried make up, that Wunderbrow tattoo stuff, I’ve even tried Sharpies - bad move, can’t recommend, particularly 15 minutes before you leave for a hospital appointment! I’m trying to hide them by growing the front a bit longer.

Seems you too are having your thyroid tested. and I totally get the hair thing, its a big part of self image. hopw you are able to find a style that suits you.

Reading up on thyroid problems, seems it could lead to further dietry restrictions. Cauliflower, brocolli, kale, spinach, and cabbage as well as strawberries. (many others) Makes me wonder if increased intake of all these foods can potentially help to create this condition

I have hypothyroidism, and don’t have to restrict my diet at all

I suspect I will be going there same way. don'the even recognise myself these daysites. Might see if what she thinks about hair colour or low lights... I didn'the realise how important all this stuff was to me.

Sweetheart, it IS US. That face we see in the mirror daily. It’s part of our psyche, and when it changes it affects how we view ourselves. God knows, I struggled enough with the blasted steroids, but hair seems even more part of ‘me’.

Massive hugs, you’ll look amazing with short hair, it really shows off eyes

Hear hear about pixie cuts. Another (sadly late) friend lost all her hair with chemo then when it grew back it was curly naturally although straight as a die all her previous life.

She kept it that style permanently after that and we all still loved it. I dunno why some people are so fixed in their ways that they think people will even be fooled for a split second that now they are OAPS they will have retained their glowing youthful hair colour. Greying dark hair - as well as fair hair - looks terrific with very fine lowlights BUT if the natural shade is very dark - it usually needs to be lightened a bit first in order to get eg a pink to take. May well not be a great idea. Let your hair get over the tinting and recover as much as it's going to first, please. Intensive conditioning?

Thank you for the help. Feel less upset by it all and am ready for the chop.🙂

As Madeline said, short hair shows off your eyes, but also your earrings. Any chance you could get a new pair?

thats good, hope the same applies to me. but then, considering the advice given about prediabetes seems unlikely they would mention diet, even if it did need adapting.

Oddly enough I was thinking about earings today. I can embrace my inner hippee. There is one there believe me, I have taken to wearing some beautiful scarfs and wraps. Less freaked about the hair now I have decided to get on with it. Get the blood test done and then off to hairdresser. HAve a couple of weeks working from home son have time to sort it all out and get used to it.How r things with u?
