Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all,
My journey with diabetes started 2 years ago and has not been very good so far, was first given metformin that made be lethargic and too many trips to the bathroom. I was then put on sukarto again same problems with bathroom trips. I am now on dapaglifozin 5mg per day with glucose monitor. Baseline start of day readings 13.3 mmol, have tried light snack before bed and morning reading went down to 10.1 mmol. Cannot seem to get the glucose any lower.....
I am at my wits end trying to fathom out why the readings are high in the morning.

Have you been eating a low carb diet?
If you are consuming lots of 'healthy' carbohydrates, you are going to be seeing high blood glucose and giving your doctor a reason to medicate the symptom and not the cause of it.

Yes l have gone on a low carb diet, always checking vegetables to see if they are on the recommended list and eating meat. If i have carbs they make me very sleepy in a short time of consuming them. I think i may have the dawn phenomenum as blood glucose is high in the morning and gets to single figures in late afternoon only to climb again in the evening (roller coaster affect). Have only last week got the glucose momitor and was horrified to see the double figure results first thing in the morning. At a loss on what to do next.

And you say you've regularly been having a teeny bit of carb/fat/protein immediately before bed? What's your BG at bedtime?

Hi, i have only recently started the snack before bedtime as i read about the dawn phenomenum and rising glucose levels during the night
My glucose level the other day was
09:30 13.3 mmol
12:50 10.9 mmol
16:35 7.8 mmol
00:00 12.6 mmol followed by carb snack (consisting of 1 slice from small seeded batch loaf and cholesterol reducing spread)
05:30 9.7 mmol
09:30 10.5 mmol

I asked the dr for the glucose monitor, as i want to seek a reason behind the diabetes, dont like the idea of taking pills on their own without making changes with my diet etc, i have made changes dropped a few pounds but the glucose levels are higher without the snack at bedtime.

You aren't testing before and c 2 hrs after meals though - so how do you know how badly or well whatever you just ate, affects your blood glucose?

Try reading this please - http://loraldiabetes.blogspot.com/2006/10/test-review-adjust.html

I think actually doing what Alan tells us to do, you'll be able to adjust what you eat so much more easily. It's very sensible advice and it applies to all of us whatever 'Type' we happen to have!

In an ideal world we want our BG meter to read around 5 most of the time, then when we eat, the after reading should be no more than 3.0 more than the before one, then overnight, the morning reading should be no more than 2.0 either up or down from the bedtime one.

Please note I said in an IDEAL world ! But it gives us all the ballpark we're aiming for at least! 🙂

Have you considered changing your snack just before you go to bed to something that is primarily protein or fat? Even 1 slice of a seeded bed could send you high.

e.g., Cheese, some sliced chicken, nuts?
