At risk of diabetes
10C5E116-086D-440C-B85F-DDB1B90BD934.jpeg Work Xmas meal - being new to diabetes I am still learning and I am aware there may be hidden pitfalls too :(

I will be really sad to miss the homemade fudge - it’s the one thing I used to love most as a Christmas treat

We're all different, and can eat different quantities of things.
If you are only at risk of diabetes, what changes are you making?
What were your results, and do you need to lose any weight?

I'd go for the salmon, turkey and then cheese - avoiding things which are high carb, such as the stuffing and potatoes, and crackers - things such as the trifle could be made low carb, but would not be as making custard with real cream and eggs is far more expensive and time consuming than using custard powder, ant the sugar would be added by the shovelful, no doubt.
I would probably slice the tops off a couple of mince pies and eat them as tarts, and ask for cream for the coffee, more in hope than expectation, and avoid the fudge.

My initial hba1c (6 weeks ago) was 45 so I am ‘pre-diabetic’ and I have been following a low carb diet since but have made a few boo-boos along the way 😳. I can’t seem to manage rice or bread at all, potatoes and pasta are ok if I limit the quantity. I have lost 10lb so far (now 12st 3lb at 5’6”)

@Drummer I’m not a fan of salmon, I was going to go for the roast (it’s not really Xmas without a roast turkey dinner!) but wasn’t sure about the rest. Was thinking cheese without crackers might be the only option for pudding.
Would the sorbet be high in sugar?

I assume you are testing your BG to see what various foods do to you?

I'd go for the salmon, the turkey with all the trimmings, christmas pudding, and the mince pie.
I've never been a great fudge eater.

I guess it depends on how low carb you feel you need to go.

I lost weight, by a low fat diet, then the Newcastle diet, and seemed to have reversed my type 2.
Even so, I didn't let diabetes spoil my christmas, I just ate a sensible quantity for dinner before then.

You could have a chat with the restaurant and maybe ask about the different options and ingredients and decide from there. They would be used to giving this kind of information to customers.

Every course, a carb fest LOL

Starter - the goats cheese & fennel tart sounds about the least carbs - and I adore watercress anyway so I fancy that one.

Sorbet - usually served in very small portions, with the same sized spoon to eat it - so you taste half a spoonful nd if it's too sweet say 'that's a shame, I don't like this' and just leave it.

Main - turkey and the pig in a blanket and a couple of roast spuds plus the seasonal veg, and I'd have some gravy. Not sure I fancy cranberry stuffing - I like a savoury stuffing whether it's breadcrumb based or chestnut - you don't get a massive amount 'out' anyway so don't stress about it if it turns out you like it and you eat the lot.

Dessert - not much to choose really unless you pay extra and have the cheese without the crackers. Again the portion of trifle won't be huge so I'd probably choose that - but if you don't fancy trifle, the next least is most likely the ice cream.

Finally - avoid the mince pie, have the coffee and DO have a piece of fudge to reward yourself for making the best choices. This is only once a year - not every other day - so the main thing is ENJOY yourself!

The standing diabetic joke other than the lancet one, is that every one of us has two carb free days a year ie whatever we happen to eat, has no carbs whatsoever so we (almost) get 2 days off. One of these days is always December 25th and the other is our birthday. Unless your birthday is in the second half of December, because you probably didn't have your carb free birthday in 2018 - it must be that day instead! LOL

I wouldn't worry about it too much, @Lioncub, as trophywench says it's one of the two days a year when carbs don't exist! Join your workmates and have a good time - you can work it all off later 😉

PS that menu sounds lovely...:D

The chicken terrine would be second choice, though picking out the apricots.
My thoughts are that I'll take a day off when my diabetes does - I don't worry about it in the least - I know that I have got diabetes beaten, so every day I make sure it knows that it has simply not got a hope.
Sorbet is probably going to be loads of sugar - the normal level of sweetening is far too high for me these days so I'd not bother - it would spoil things for me to have a sickly sweet dessert.

That's the difference between the Low carb high fat diet and the very low calorie eight week diet.
You get no days off for the future.
I got a reset back to a normal life.

I'm with Trophy Wench and Pine Marten in this one. Order whatever you fancy, it's Christmas after all. Enjoy your meal with your workmates. An occasional treat and special meal once in a while does you goid.

I must admit I'm with TW, PM & Stitch as well.... No use stressing over one meal

I’m having a selective memory for Christmas. Everyone is here, and my eldest is bringing those M&S acorn things for pudding, over my dead body will I be missing those.
