Relationship to Diabetes
Parent of person with diabetes
Hi everyone. My 7 yr old has been diagnosed with type 1 a month ago. Although it's been quite overwhelming we've managed to do ok with the carb counting and injections. But I've noticed my son's hair falling out now. His thyroid function was normal at the time of diagnosis. Apart from the diabetes, he's otherwise healthy. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm worried about alopecia.
Thanks
P.s we have a strong history of hypothyroidism in the family

Never heard of it in connection with diabetes so think you're barking up the wrong tree. What does your GP reckon?

Nothing to say - since they are both autoimmune conditions - that the rogue cells that killed our Beta cells haven't also had a field day elsewhere, perhaps - but I haven't a clue.

Hi trophywench, thanks for replying. I haven't seen the gp about this yet. We have an appt at diabetes clinic this week so I thought I'd mention it to them. Until now he only had a few hairs sticking in the hairbrush but today there was quite a lot. Almost a full clump. As much as I want to stay strong for him, I can't help worrying.

Worth mentioning to your GP, But...when your body is under stress, ( as your son's would have been leading up to diagnosis) the body tends to shut down any unnecessary processes, of which hair renewal is one. It may just be that now his body is less stressed, it’s able to produce new hair again, so it’s shedding overdue old hair. Can you see any short, fine hair growing in the place of the falling out bits? (If not, and it’s just getting thinner and you can see bare scalp, then that’s probably not the reason.)

Hi Robin, sorry I've just seen your message. Thank you for replying. What you wrote definitely makes sense and tbh the thought had crossed my mind. I'm hoping that is the reason for his hair loss but I suppose I'm getting a bit paranoid about every little thing since his diagnosis. I never expected type 1 in my family and with my daughter's hypothyroidism, I can't help but worry. Plus my mother in law passed away feom an autoimmune diaease so I'm always on guard now.
