Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi,
Just joined to get some support and advice.I have been type 2 diabetes for about 15 years now on a very strict diet and dont drink, smoke etc.Medication is metaformin and glitz.Question doing everything yet my sugar levels not going down any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Trojan, i am sorry to here that. I think you need to get advice.from a doctor...as it is not good that you are.unable to lower your sugar levels. You may need to go onto insulin if meds not working.

Hiya - when you say you are on a very restricted diet, that immediately rings a bit of an alarm bell with me since there's only one element diabetics can't handle well, and that's carbohydrates. Just omitting to eat so many carbs isn't that restrictive really - most of them aren't even essential to the human body.

What actually are your blood glucose readings, day to day? What doses of Metformin and Gliclazide are you on and when do you take them? Very importantly - are you on any other drugs for any other conditions?

There might be all sorts of tweaks people here have tried which might help you - let's have a think about those, once we have a few more details, please.

First off i have chronic cardiovasular disease-diagnosed in last 3 months 3 partially blocked arteries. So i have meds for that,Nicorandil, betablocker, asprin and a statin. For diabetes I take 2000mg metaformin,Glitz 10mg metaformin taken in morning and night and glitz, morning.Sugar levels usually 7-8 but recent BT are now up to 10. Dr has today taken me off Glitz and put me on Glimepiride 4mgs.He thinks what I am doing is OK so unsure why levels have risen so much. I have cut portion sizes as well in last 3 months. I Don't eat a lot of carbs-just small portions of brown rice/pasta/bread and occasionally potatoes (but more usually sweet potatoes). I never eat anything sweet like cakes, pastries, sweets, biscuits, processed or takeaways etc. Do not eat meat or cheese. I only eat a wide range vegetables, few carbs and some fruit and fish like Tuna/salmon/haddock.Dairy i just eat low fat/no fat yogurt. I walk every day for about an hour and do other exercise like pilates 3 times a week. Any thoughts or advice very much appreciated!Thank you.

If you are a fully fledged type two diabetic with high blood glucose then high carb foods would be the usual suspects - potatoes, rice, bread, pasta, fruit, as they normally cause spikes.
Low fat products are usually high carb too, so eating the full fat option is a better choice, meat, fish, cheese, eggs, shellfish, cream in coffee rather than milk, then add in anything low in carbs, there are lots of choices for salads or stir fries, or included in the roasting dish.
There is quite a lot of suspicion that it is high carb diets which are the cause of cardiovascular problems, which is why the life expectancy of those who have been urged to eat low fat for so long is going down rather than up.

I have frozen berries in the freezer, which I eat with thick cream a couple of times a week. I use a small bowl and tip them out before starting to eat dinner so they have time to soften but not go to mush.

Hi, as the others have said it is carbs that are the enemy, I also have heart disease so for you and I it’s even more important to control our blood sugars to avoid vascular damage. I cut out all pasta, potatoes, rice and the only bread I eat is Burgen, a low carb soy and linseed option that works well for sandwiches or toast. My bg averages around 5 to 6 from my starting point of 22 which was 6 months ago, I walk a friends dog as often as I can, the combination has dropped my weight over 2 stone and still dropping, my breathing is SO much better, I have more energy than I have ever had
